One of baseball’s oldest rivalries will be renewed in Major League Baseball betting action when the Chicago Cubs travel to face the St. Louis Cardinals Friday night at 8:15 ET on Fox Sports Midwest at Busch Stadium. This has been a one-sided rivalry for some time now with the Cards getting the best of the lowly Cubbies on most encounters.

The Cubs are once again off to an awful start to the season having lost six of their first nine games of the new year. On Thursday they were beaten 5-4 by the Pittsburgh Pirates, it ran their record to 2-5 SU against the Pirates who they have already seen seven times in this young season. Chicago’s offense really isn’t playing all that bad averaging 3.67 runs of support per game. Shortstop Starlin Castro has hit a couple homeruns thus far and second baseman Emilio Bonifacio is batting an incredible .452 in his first nine games with the team. The Cubs chances of winning go up exponentially when pitcher Jeff Samardzija is on the hill shutting down opponents. In 14 innings of work he has struck out 11 batters, walked just five, and put up a 1.29 ERA which makes him by far the Cubbies best pitcher. Chicago will need another huge outing from Samardzija in this game if it wants to pull out a win against its most heated rival. The Cubs are a feeble 7-20 SU in their last 27 trips to the arch.

The Cardinals lost 4-0 in their bid to sweep the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. They managed just four hits in the game against Reds pitcher Mike Leake who threw for 8.0 strong innings. Catcher Yadier Molina is off to a hot start for St. Louis as he has hit three dingers and has a solid .286 batting average. The Cards offense has not been as good as advertised to this point scoring just 3.22 runs per game. They have also been shut out twice in their first nine games of the season and that has to be eating at manager Mike Matheny who usually fields great offensive lineups. The Cardinals will counter on the mound with Joe Kelly who has a 1.69 ERA. He worked 5.1 innings in his last start defeating the Pirates 6-1 giving up just six hits and striking out four batters. If he is able to have a similar outing against the Cubs, this game could turn into an extremely low scoring battle as the 7.5 total suggests.

The Cubs are going off at +131 ML in this game and that is a number that just might work out in their favor. With Samardzija pulling the trigger on the mound we like Chicago’s chances to start this series off with a victory over St. Louis on the road. While the historical numbers don’t really call for the upset, we like the Cubs to get a win behind solid pitching and timely hitting from a lineup that has shown the ability to score some runs.

Chicago Cubs @ Chicago Cardinals Pick: Chicago Cubs +131
