Two of the best teams in the American League East will meet in Major League Baseball betting action when the Boston Red Sox face the New York Yankees Sunday night at 8:05 ET at Yankee Stadium on ESPN. This will be the rubber match of a four game series that the home team leads two games to one.
The Red Sox fell 7-4 to the Yankees on Saturday as starting pitcher John Lackey had an awful day giving up six earned runs and 10 hits in just 5.2 innings of work. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski led the way for Boston offensively recording his first homer of the year, a two run shot in the second inning that tied the game at two-apiece. As one of the newest members of the Red Sox, Pierzynski is hitting .344, has four RBI’s, and five runs scored. Manager John Farrell will send Felix Doubront to the mound on Sunday to try and get his team out of the Bronx with a split of the series. Doubront’s last start didn’t go very well as he gave up five runs and six hits in just 2.2 innings of work against the Texas Rangers in a 10-7 loss. His ERA thus far is an even 9.00 and he has allowed eight runs in 8.0 innings as he struggles to find his stride early in the season. Boston will hope to see him take some steps in the right direction in this game as he will try to get his first win over the Yanks since a 12-8 triumph back on September 6th, 2013.
The Yankees lived up to their moniker of “Bronx Bombers” on Saturday as they belted five long balls off of Lackey including back-to-back jacks from Brian McCann and Alfonso Soriano. Pitcher Hiroki Kuroda went 6.1 innings allowing four runs on six hits in his second win of the season. Carlos Beltran and Kelly Johnson also had homeruns for New York that helped blow open a big lead. On Sunday manager Joe Girardi will try to get a better outing from pitcher Ivan Nova who was roughed up in his last start much like his counterpart in this game. He went just 3.2 innings allowing seven runs and 10 hits in a 14-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. It will be crucial to the Yankees success to get a tight game out of Nova in what figures to be another high scoring affair in the Big Apple. New York got back to .500 at 6-6 SU on this young season with Saturday’s win, on Sunday it will try to get back above that mark.
The Red Sox are 7-3 SU in their L/10 meetings with the Yankees and that could bode well for them in this game. We like Doubront to do well against this lefty heavy lineup of the Yanks who are hitting just .250 against left handed pitchers. Look for Boston to bounce back and get a much needed split of the series.
