The old Route 66 rivalry is reignited on Sunday, when the St. Louis Cardinals travel to Wrigley Field to play the Chicago Cubs. The last game in a three game home stand for the Cubs, it is a chance for the struggling last place team to gain some ground on their neighborly rivals.

The Cardinals swept the Cubs in their last series this year. Beating them 10-4 and then 6-4 in St. Louis at the hands of pitching ace Michael Wacha.

But the Cubs took the first game of this series against ace Adam Wainwright, snapping his 25-inning scoreless streak in the first inning. The Cubs put up 6 runs in the first five innings on their way to a win.

This Sunday, Lance Ryan will take the mound for the Cards. He brings a 4-1 record into Wrigley Field. Ryan has suffered through early inning problems this year on his quest to notch a fifth win. If the Cubs get tag a few runs early they can jump out to an early lead and force the Cardinals to rely on their bullpen.

Ryan was pulled early in his last outing, a loss. For the Cubs, Jason Hammel takes the mound. Hammel is having an excellent month for the Cubs. With five quality starts, he is 4-1 and leads the MLB in WHIP.

His wins include a no-hit five inning stand against the Brewers, with only three total hits through his seven inning outing. If he can continue his excellent pitching, the Cubs have a shot at making up ground against the Cards. Though still early, it would give fresh confidence to a struggling team.

They also have a shot at climbing out of last place in the National League Central. They are just one game behind the Pirates.

The Cardinals hope to put even more distance between themselves and their struggling rivals. Their record of 15-15 puts them in second place behind the surging Brewers. They are far behind, however. The Brewers at 21-9 are leading the charge in the early season.
