Oakland remains one of the hottest teams in all of the Majors and looks to stay that way when it takes on the lowly Tamp Bay Rays. Both teams are heading in completely opposite directlys and, if the pitching matchup looks to be any indication, these trends are going to continue. However, the Rays are hoping to bring a bit of home field magic at Tropicana Field as they welcome the Athletics to town.
The American League West division leading Oakland Athletics come to down featuring Drew Pomeranz. The left handed pitcher is currently standing with a 3-1 record and an outstanding 1.14 ERA. He has one of the very best ERAs in all of the majors and, during his last start, he tossed five scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox and struck out eight during the span.
For the Rays, Tampa Bay is bringing right handed pitcher Jake Odorizzi to the mound. Jake currently has a 2-3 record with a less then stellar 4.89 ERA. However, the rookie pitcher did give his best performance in his previous start, giving up only one hit and two walks over six innings while striking out seven.
Tampa Bay has struggled throughout the season as the team just has not seemed to fall into a rhythm. The team, which sits at the bottom of the American League East standings does have to face stiff competition throughout the rest of the East, but the sub 20-win team has almost 10 fewer wins than the Athletics, which is rather sizable when less than 50 games are in the books. Neither team is terribly powerful when it comes to offense, but the Rays are struggling at home, so it is difficult to tell what exactly is going to happen with this matchup. In fact, Tampa Bay is only 8-12 prior to Monday's game at the Trop. Most of Tampa's hitters do have some pop in their swing though, as nine players have at least three home runs. The players just can't seem to get it all together at the same time.
