The Oakland Athletics dealt the New York Yankees their third straight defeat on Tuesday, so things are not all that gleeful in the Bronx. Will they get any happier with Vidal Nuno on the mound for Wednesday's contest?
Nuno (1-2, 5.48 ERA) is something of a stopgap presence in the rotation, inserted due to injuries to CC Sabathia and Michael Pineda, and he was hammered for long balls last time out. The southpaw takes the hill against the American League West leaders in MLB betting action that is set to get underway at 7:05 PM ET.
It was a heart-breaker yesterday, as the Bombers fell 5-2 in ten innings, when Brandon Moss, who returned to the lineup after a calf injury, smashed his 15th homer of the season. That spoiled a nice effort out of Mark Teixeira, who returned after missing a couple of games due to more trouble with his surgically-repaired wrist.
The Yankees, who have scored just ten runs in their last five outings, are going to try to stay over the .500 mark. They stand at 29-28, which is five games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East and a half game behind the Seattle mariners and Baltimore Orioles in a battle for the second wild card position in the AL.
Oakland (36-22), which got a solid performance out of southpaw Scott Kazmir on Tuesday, is now leading the American League West by 5.5 games over the Los Angeles Angels, who have lost four in a row.
In the MLB betting odds that have been placed on this game by the folks at VietBet, the A's are in the favorite's role:
Oakland Athletics (Chavez - R) -143
New York Yankees (Nuno - L) +133
Over 9 Runs -115
Under 9 Runs -105
Teixeira's wrist has caused some concern for the Yankees since he came back to the lineup and he missed a couple of games, but the determination was that structural damage was not the problem, so they gave him a shot and he hit a homer on Tuesday. It certainly behooves the Yankees to use him in this series, as he has driven in 51 runs in his last 41 games against Oakland pitching.
And on Wednesday the A's turn to righty Jesse Chavez, who was very strong in five of his first six starts, as he compiled a 1.89 ERA and the A's went 6-0. But he has been rather reachable over his last two, giving up seven runs (five earned) and 16 hits over 11-1/3 innings. On the season, his numbers are 4-3 with a 2.78 ERA. Nuno left with two outs in the seventh inning of last Friday's 6-1 defeat against the Minnesota Twins, having surrendered three home runs. As VietBet customers in MLB betting know, right now the Yankees are treading water in the starting rotation with Sabathia, Pineda and Ivan Nova out of action. Carlos Beltran is currently in what is being called an "extended spring training" in Tampa as he rehabs an elbow injury. It seems we are always talking about injuries when it comes to the Yankees.
The timely hits are not coming, and Nuno can't throw a fastball over 90 miles an hour, it seems. But he did go some innings in his start previous to the last one. As bad as the results have been for Chavez, he's allowed more than three earned runs only once in eleven starts. We're going UNDER 9 runs (-105) in MLB betting for Wednesday night's game at the Stadium.
