An American League battle will be featured in Major League Baseball betting action when the Boston Red Sox travel to face the Detroit Tigers Sunday night at 8:05 ET on ESPN at Comerica Park. This will be the rubber match of a three game series with the Tigers going for the sweep after taking the first two contests.
The Red Sox managed 15 hits on Saturday, but they fell short in an 8-6 loss to the Tigers to lose their fifth straight on the road. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia hit his third homerun of the season in the game as he was 3-for-4 at the dish with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Designated hitter David Ortiz had a double that knocked in two runs as well for Boston as it tried to stay in the game. Pitcher Jon Lester lasted just 4.1 innings as he gave up five runs on 12 hits to fall to 6-7 on the year. Right hander John Lackey will get the start as he will try to help the Red Sox avoid a sweep on Sunday night. Lackey comes in with a 6-6 record as he has thrown 79.2 innings thus far and has a 3.28 ERA. Lackey recorded a quality start his last time out giving up three runs on eight hits in 8.0 innings, but took a loss to the Cleveland Indians that day. Boston is just 3-10 in its L/13 games played in the Motor City.
The Tigers were knocking the cover off the ball as three players managed to get three hits each in the win. Third baseman Nick Castellanos went 3-for-4 including his fifth homer of the season and first baseman Miguel Cabrera was also 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win. Eight of Detroit’s nine starters registered an RBI as it took down Boston for the second straight day. Ace pitcher Max Scherzer got the win as he improved to 7-2, but he was mostly off as he gave up four runs on 11 hits while striking out nine. Anibal Sanchez will take the hill for Detroit on Sunday as he will try to improve on a 2-2 record. The right hander was excellent in his last start as he gave up just two hits in 7.0 innings, but took a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays as the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. The Tigers are just 2-7 in their L/9 games as a ‘favorite’ and will be trying to improve on that mark in this contest.
The Red Sox found their offensive groove on Saturday and they must carry that over into this game as they can’t afford to take a sweep to these Tigers. We expect to see a lot of fireworks on national television as these two powerful offenses have shown they can put up runs in a hurry. We’re going with Boston to get the job done and figure out a way to beat Detroit on the road for the first time since last October.
