An American League East battle will be featured in Major League Baseball betting action when the Boston Red Sox travel to face the New York Yankees Sunday night at 8:05 ET on ESPN at Yankee Stadium. This will be the rubber match of a three game series with both teams splitting the first two match-ups.
The Red Sox got a 2-1 win on Saturday as they try to claw their way back into contention in the AL East. First baseman Mike Napoli hit his 10th homerun of the season in the ninth inning that proved to be enough for closer Koji Uehara who got the save. Catcher David Ross also went deep in the win for Boston that opened the scoring in the third inning to give his team an early lead. Pitcher Jon Lester had one of his best outings of the season going 8.0 innings giving up just one run on five hits to improve to a 9-7 record. On Sunday right hander John Lackey will be charged with getting the Red Sox a series win as he comes in with an 8-5 mark and a 3.45 ERA in 107 innings of work. Lackey was lit up in his last start as he surrendered seven runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings as the Seattle Mariners defeated Boston 12-3 on Monday. The ‘under’ has been a great play for the Red Sox as ‘underdogs’ as it is 9-3 in their L/12 such contests.
The Yankees were completely shut down offensively as they managed only seven base runners in the entire game. Shortstop Derek Jeter was 1-for-3 at the plate as he drove in New York’s only run of the game on a single in the third inning. Former Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was his team’s sole member to get two hits as he finished 2-for-4 at the dish in the loss. Rookie sensation pitcher Masahiro Tanaka went the distance giving up two runs on seven hits as he struck out eight hitters taking just his third defeat of the year. Right hander Chase Whitley gets the start for New York in this one as he comes in with a 3-1 record and a 4.27 ERA in 42.0 innings this season. Whitley took a beating against the Toronto Blue Jays on the road Monday as he allowed eight runs on 11 hits in just 3.1 innings of an 8-3 loss north of the border. The Yanks are 6-2 in Whitley’s L/8 starts, which bodes well for those looking at a first five innings bet specifically based on the pitching match-up.
The Yankees have been challenged at home this season going just 18-19 in Yankee Stadium to this point. That makes us think about making some money on the ‘underdog’ as the Red Sox win on Saturday was a sign of good things to come. We expect to see a big game out of Lackey who needs to prove his worth for Boston to have any chance at getting itself back in this race. Go with the Red Sox to get a win on the road and take the series in the Big Apple.
