An American League battle will be featured in Major League Baseball betting action when the New York Yankees travel to face the Minnesota Twins Thursday night at 8:10 ET on FSN at Target Field. This will be the opener in a three game series with the Yankees coming in as ‘favorites’ on the board.

The Yankees lost their fifth straight game as they were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays at home in three contests. They fell short again on Wednesday in a 6-3 loss to the Rays. Left fielder Brett Gardner led off New York’s half of the first inning with his sixth homerun of the season as he finished with two RBI’s and a run scored. Catcher Brian McCann also contributed in the loss as he went 2-for-4 launching his 10th bomb of the year to account for a run scored and an RBI. Pitcher Vidal Nuno went 5.0 innings giving up four runs on eight hits as he fell to 2-5 in his starts. Right hander Masahiro Tanaka comes in with an 11-3 record as he has a 2.10 ERA in 115.2 innings of work. The Yankees ace has lost his last two starts, but only given up five runs in them while receiving just one run of support. New York is 7-3 in its L/10 games as a ‘favorite’ as it tries to reverse this current losing streak.

The Twins dropped two of three in a series with the Kansas City Royals and were shut out 4-0 on Wednesday as their offense continues to struggle. Minnesota managed just four hits in the loss and first baseman Chris Parmelee had two of them. Leaving 10 men on base was the formula for disaster as the Twins need to start converting in these situations. Pitcher Kevin Correia went 6.0 innings giving up two runs on six hits, but he took the loss to fall to 4-10 on the year. Right hander Phil Hughes will take the mound for Minnesota as he comes in with an 8-4 record as he has a 3.58 ERA in 103.0 innings pitched. Hughes got no offensive help as he surrendered five runs on 11 hits in his last start that was a 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers on the road. The Twins have lost seven of their L/10 games overall and a turnaround seems nowhere in sight for this group.

The Yankees clearly have the upper hand in this match-up of two great pitchers in the American League. Tanaka should have his way with a Twins lineup that is failing to score runs on a daily basis against average pitching, much less a hurler of his caliber. We like the Yankees to go on the road and open up this series with a win behind a great game from Tanaka and a lineup that is hungry to break out of a losing streak. The Yankees are 73-27 in the L/100 match-ups against the Twins and they will improve on that mark in this contest.
