An American League battle will be featured in Major League Baseball betting action when the New York Yankees travel to face the Cleveland Indians Monday night at 7:00 ET on ESPN at Progressive Field. This will be the opener in a four game series with pickem’ odds on the board between these evenly matched squads.
The Yankees got back on track taking three of four from the Minnesota Twins on the road over the weekend. They really got the offense cranked up in a 9-7 win on Sunday to secure the series victory. Shortstop Derek Jeter had a big day going 3-for-4 at the plate knocking in two RBI’s and scoring another. Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury hit his fifth homerun of the year and added a double as he had four RBI’s and two runs scored in the win. Pitcher Hiroki Kuroda went 5.2 innings allowing four runs on seven hits to even his record at 6-6 on the season. Right hander Shane Greene will be recalled from the minors to start for New York in this game. Greene’s debut came April 24th at the Boston Red Sox in which he walked three of the four hitters he faced and gave up three runs. Jeter will be playing his last series in Cleveland and he is 9-for-23 against Indians starter Justin Masterson in his career. The Yankees have been shaky of late going 2-6 in their L/8 games overall including a five game losing streak earlier this month.
The Indians won for the second straight day at home against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday as they got a 4-1 victory. Catcher Yan Gomes hit his 10th homerun of the season as he went 2-for-4 at the dish with two RBI’s and a run scored. Center fielder Michael Bradley and first baseman Carlos Santana had the other RBI’s for Cleveland in the win. Pitcher Corey Kluber went 8.1 innings giving up just one run on four hits as he struck out 10 Royals batters to pick up his eighth win. The right handed Masterson has never lost to the Yankees at Progressive Field, but he comes in with just a 4-5 record this season. He played well in his last start as he led the Indians to a 10-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers by surrendering only seven hits. Cleveland is 13-5 in its L/18 games at home and it is 25-16 in home contests this season. The Indians have one of the best offensive lineups in the league as they hit for a .254 batting average and score 4.41 runs per game.
The Indians clearly have the better starting pitcher in this contest as Masterson is a much more experienced hurler than Greene for the Yankees. We like the Indians lineup to rip the rookie and get a big win at home to start off this series. New York has had a terrible time figuring out Masterson and it will once again on Monday night as we kick off the final week of action before the All-Star break.
