One of baseball’s oldest rivalries will be renewed in Major League Baseball betting action when the Pittsburgh Pirates travel to face the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday night at 8:15 ET on ESPN at Busch Stadium. This will be the third of a four game series with the Cardinals coming in as ‘favorites’ on the board.

The Pirates fell 5-4 to the Cardinals on Tuesday as they went down 0-2 in this series. Center fielder Andrew McCutchen hit his 14th homerun of the season as he went 1-for-3 at the plate. Right fielder Gregory Polanco went 3-for-5 with a run scored in the loss. Pitcher Vance Worley went 5.0 innings allowing four runs on nine hits as he struck out three batters. On Wednesday Brandon Cumpton will get the start for Pittsburgh as he comes in with a 3-2 record and a 4.61 ERA this season. He received a no decision in his last start as he held the New York Mets to just two runs on six hits in a 3-2 victory. The Pirates are 12-5 in their L/17 games overall, but now they must figure out a way to close out the Cards in this contest. Pittsburgh is just 1-4 in its L/5 contests at Busch Stadium as the last triumph came on April 26th of this year, but it has lost three straight since then.

The Cardinals got a big homerun from second baseman Kolten Wong to provide the walk-off win with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Wong hit a two RBI double earlier in the game as he went 2-for-4 at the dish and finished with three RBI’s in the win. Pitcher Carlos Martinez lasted 6.0 innings giving up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in the contest where he received a no decision. One of St. Louis better pitchers Lance Lynn will get the nod in this one as he comes in with a 9-6 record and a 3.17 ERA in 108.0 innings of work. Lynn gave up just five hits and no runs in a 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins in his last start where he managed to last 6.2 innings. The ‘over’ is 8-2 in Lynn’s L/10 starts against the Pirates and could come in again just as it did on Tuesday. St. Louis continues to chase the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central, but will need big wins over Pittsburgh to keep its distance from third place.

The Pirates will need to get the offense going early as McCutchen will need to have a big night for his team to have a chance. We expect to see Cumpton pitch well enough to give the bullpen a chance to redeem itself in this game. A big win to stop this short slide is just what the Pirates need on Wednesday and they will get that by scoring some runs to give their pitching staff a boost.
