It’s hardly the time of pitching matchup that fans and bettors have come to expect from two teams that regularly approach or surpass $200M in payroll, but Shane Greene and Allen Webster will take center stage for their respective teams on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game set at Fenway Park. The Red Sox made Anthony Ranaudo a winner in his Major League debut on Friday night in the series opener and that win pushed the Yankees to 3.5 games back in the AL Wild Card chase and six games back in the AL East.

Shane Greene will be making his fourth career Major League start in this one as he tries to bounce back from a couple of mediocre outings. After allowing three unearned runs on five hits in one-third of an inning against the Red Sox in his Major League debut, Greene made two solid starts against the Orioles and Indians with two runs allowed over 13.1 innings with an 11/2 K/BB ratio. In two starts since, Greene has allowed seven runs in 11 innings.

Allen Webster was positively awful in his seven-start stint at the Major League level in 2013. He should get an extended look the rest of this season with the trades of Jon Lester and John Lackey on Thursday. Webster struggled in that start, even though he only allowed two runs on three hits. He walked five in just 5.1 innings, but did pick up his second Major League victory. In Webster’s eight appearances, seven starts, last season, he posted a 1-2 record and an 8.31 ERA.

Greene will be facing the Red Sox for the second time in his career, but it will be his first start. The Yankees are 2-2 in Greene’s four starts for a loss of 0.1 units. Webster will be making his second appearance, but first career start, against the Yankees. Webster won as a +126 underdog in his first start of the season and the Red Sox were 3-4 in his starts last season for a loss of 1.02 units.

The Yankees know what to expect from Greene at this point, while the Red Sox have no clue what they’re going to get from Webster. He has had problems throwing strikes at the Major League level and the Yankees remain in the middle of the pack in walk rate even though the roster looks a lot different than it has in the past. Things in Boston are a bit somber right now after they dictated the seller’s market on Thursday and even a series against their hated rival can’t make that any easier.
