The Yankees and Orioles had Tuesday night’s middle game rained out, so the Orioles will have a shot at a two-game sweep on Wednesday night when Michael Pineda returns from a long disabled list stint to take on Chris Tillman. The Orioles overcame three errors on Monday night with 11 runs in an 11-3 rout, their seventh win in 10 games over the Yankees this season. That victory widened Baltimore’s lead over the Yankees to seven games.

Michael Pineda was suspended for using pine tar on the mound and suffered a strained lat muscle while throwing a simulated game during that suspension. Pineda has thrown two rehab outings at Triple-A and was scheduled for a third, but the Yankees and their playoff hopes are fading fast, so the decision was made to bring Pineda back to the rotation. Pineda allowed two runs over 7.2 rehab innings with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. At the Major League level this season, Pineda had a 5/1 K/BB ratio and allowed just four runs over 19.2 innings before the suspension and injury. His four April starts were his first MLB action since 2011.

Chris Tillman will be making his 26th start of the season and he has been spectacular since early June. After reaching a high point of 5.20 with his ERA following his June 5 start against Texas, Tillman has posted a 2.40 ERA over his last 12 starts to lower his season ERA to 3.73. Opponents have posted a .593 OPS against Tillman in that span, which covers 78.2 innings. All but one of those 12 starts have qualified as quality starts of six or more innings pitched and three or fewer earned runs allowed.

Pineda has two career starts against the Orioles. Both of them came as a member of the Seattle Mariners in 2011. In a very small sample size of 29 plate appearances, current Orioles have posted a 1.083 OPS off of Pineda. The Yankees were 2-2 in Pineda’s four starts in April for a total of 0.00 units gained or lost.

Tillman 5-5 with a 5.64 ERA in 12 previous starts against the Yankees, including two starts this season. Tillman threw seven shutout innings on June 22 and allowed three runs over 6.2 innings on July 12. He’s 1-1 this season against the Yankees. On the season, the Orioles are 16-9 in Tillman’s 25 starts. That’s a profit of 8.67 units, making Tillman one of the game’s most profitable starters to back.

Free MLB Pick: Baltimore

Expect some rust from Pineda in this start and expect the Orioles to keep rolling right along at home. The Yankees have had all sorts of problems in middle relief and it’s unlikely that Pineda will work too deep into the game. Tillman has been on quite a run, even though the Orioles are only 7-5 in his last 12 starts.
