MLB Betting Odds From 5Dimes Sportsbook

Probable Starters: BOS: Joe Kelly (0-1, 3.86) v. NYY: Shane Greene (4-1, 3.09)

Moneyline: New York -149

Total: 8 -115/105

The New York Yankees spent a much-needed day off waiting for the Boston Red Sox to finish up their series in Tampa. The Red Sox lost 4-3 in extra innings to drop to 60-77. The Yankees lost a half-game in the AL Wild Card standings with Detroit’s win over Cleveland, so the Yankees now trail by four games. They did pick up a half-game on Baltimore, but the Orioles lead the AL East by 8.5 games, so the wild card is the only way into the postseason for the Yankees.

Since July 22, the Red Sox are just 13-23. They’ll try to play spoiler against the Yankees on Tuesday night with Joe Kelly on the mound. Kelly, acquired from St. Louis in the John Lackey trade, was 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA for the Cardinals and is 0-1 in five starts for the Red Sox with a 3.86 ERA. One really terrible outing against Houston skews Kelly’s performance with Boston. It was the only start he lost and he allowed seven runs and walked six in four innings. Other than that, Kelly has two or fewer runs in the other five starts.

The Yankees have lost four of their last six as they desperately try to hang on in the playoff chase. They’ll send Shane Greene to the hill on Tuesday. Injuries to the pitching staff have really hurt the Yankees, who have used 32 pitches already this season. Greene’s emergence in the rotation has been big for a team that lost Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia earlier this season. Greene has made nine starts and one relief appearance. In five August starts, Greene is 2-0 with a 2.93 ERA and the Yankees have won all five of those games.

Kelly will be facing the Yankees for the first time in his career. He is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in his last three starts, all against American League teams. The Red Sox are 2-3 in Kelly’s five starts for a loss of 0.84 units.

Greene will be making his third appearance of the season against the Red Sox. He made his Major League debut against them in relief and made a start against them earlier this season. He’s allowed six runs, three earned, in five innings against the Red Sox. The Yankees are 7-2 for a profit of 5.78 units in Greene’s nine starts.

Free MLB Pick: New York Yankees

The Red Sox don’t have a whole lot of motivation at this time of year and Greene has been New York’s most consistent starter for quite some time now. The Yankees enjoyed a day off, while the Red Sox lost yet again. It’s a big number to lay in a rivalry game that will probably last four hours, but that’s another reason to like the Yankees because of the day off.

Matchup: Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians

Date/Time: September 2, 7:05 p.m. ET

MLB Betting Odds From 5Dimes Sportsbook

Probable Starters: DET: Kyle Lobstein (0-0, 3.09) v. CLE: Carlos Carrasco (6-4, 3.01)

Moneyline: Cleveland -142

Total: 8 -110/100

The Detroit Tigers blew away the Cleveland Indians with a 12-1 rout on Monday behind David Price and a major fielding miscue early in the game by the Indians. The Tigers were able to keep pace in the AL Central standings and remained a half-game behind the Royals and picked up a game in the wild card standings over the Mariners. The Indians fell to 4.5 games back in the division and four games behind in the wild card standings.

Kyle Lobstein will be in search of his first Major League win in his second career start when he takes on the Indians. He pitched well in his last outing against the Yankees with six innings of two-run ball, but he didn’t factor in the decision. Lobstein was 9-11 with a 4.07 ERA for Triple-A Toledo. He also made a relief appearance in Game 1 of a doubleheader on August 23.

Carlos Carrasco has been outstanding for the Indians since he returned to the rotation on August 10. Overall, Carrasco has made 34 appearances, eight of them starts. In his last four starts, Carrasco has allowed two runs in 24.2 innings of work. He has struck out 24, walked three, and has held the opposition to a .339 OPS. He’s 3-0 in those four starts and the Indians are 3-1 in those four games. It’s a big difference from Carrasco’s first four starts, when he posted an 0-3 record and a 6.95 ERA.

Lobstein will be facing the Indians for the first time. The Tigers won his only start for a profit of 1.11 units. Carrasco has been lit up like a Christmas tree by the Tigers in his career. In 10 appearances, five starts, Carrasco has an 8.07 ERA in 29 innings of work. This season, however, Carrasco has allowed one run in 6.1 innings. The Indians are 4-4 in Carrasco’s eight starts for a loss of 1.43 units.

Free MLB Pick: Detroit Tigers

The Indians tend to struggle a lot with pitchers that they’ve never seen before and the Tigers have had plenty of success against Carrasco in his career. The Indians were able to rest the key members of their bullpen, but the Tigers offense looks good right now and the Indians may not be able to get the ball to those guys.
