The New York Yankees were victorious on Wednesday night against the Boston Red Sox by a score of 6-1 and their AL Wild Card hopes remain alive and well. They trail in the Wild Card standings by four games. The Red Sox, meanwhile, are hoping to finish the season with a record above .500 in at least one month. They were 13-13 in April and have been on the losing side each month since. With an uncertain future for a lot of the Red Sox, that could be a tall order.

The Red Sox will send Brandon Workman to the mound on Thursday night in the series finale. Workman has had a rough season at the Major League level. His lone win came back on June 10 against Baltimore. With a stint in Triple-A mixed in, Workman is 0-8 in eight starts and one relief appearance since that victory. He has been the losing pitcher in each of his last eight appearances. In that span, Workman has a 6.25 ERA, with five more unearned runs allowed, and opponents are batting .294 against him. He has allowed nine home runs over his last 44.2 innings.

Chris Capuano has been able to chew up some innings for the Yankees since he was acquired. In seven starts, Capuano is 1-2 with a 4.01 ERA. He has a spectacular 41/8 K/BB ratio in those 42.2 innings. The 35-year-old has struggled over his last four starts, however, as opposing batters have posted a .495 slugging percentage as Capuano’s command has faltered. He has allowed 11 extra-base hits in his last 23.2 innings. Capuano has done his job though, pitching into the sixth inning or later in all seven starts with the Yankees.

Workman will be facing the Yankees for the sixth time overall, but the second time as a starter. Workman allowed four runs on seven hits in his start against them earlier this season. Overall, Workman is 2-2 with a 5.23 ERA against the Yankees. The Red Sox are just 2-10 in Workman’s 12 starts for a loss of 9.43 units. That’s the fifth-worst mark in the league.

This will be Capuano’s third start against the Red Sox in his career and second this season. He’s 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA. The Red Sox are one of five teams that Capuano has not beaten in his career. The Yankees are 3-4 for a loss of 1.81 units in his seven starts.

Free MLB Pick: New York Yankees

The Yankees should get Capuano some run support off of Workman, who really hasn’t pitched very well this season. Capuano has been giving the Yankees enough length to get the bullpen and that’s all they should need from him in this outing.

Matchup: Cincinnati Reds at Baltimore Orioles

MLB Betting Odds From 5Dimes Sportsbook

Probable Starters: CIN: Mike Leake (10-11, 3.33) v. BAL: Chris Tillman (11-5, 3.36)

Moneyline: Baltimore -147

Total: 8 105/-115

A solid pitching matchup will wrap up the interleague series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles and Reds played late into the night on Tuesday following a rain delay of more than two hours in the first inning. Wednesday night’s game was completed around the regular time as the Orioles won by a 6-0 score. The Reds are now just 15-29 since the All-Star Break, while the Orioles are 29-15 since.

Mike Leake has been very good for the Reds this season. He’s 10-11 with a 3.33 ERA in 28 starts, but his strikeout rate has increased and he’s on pace to far surpass his career high in innings pitched, which he set last season. Since the All-Star Break, Leake is just 3-4, even though he has a 2.88 ERA. Leake has been remarkably consistent this season and his ERA has never been above 3.80 at the end of a start.

Chris Tillman has been a big reason why the Orioles have been rolling along for the better part of three months. Through his first 13 starts, Tillman was 5-2, but with a 5.20 ERA. Since June 10, Tillman has a spectacular 2.15 ERA over 105.2 innings of work. Opposing batters are posting a .569 OPS against Tillman in that span. The Orioles have given Tillman nearly five runs of support per start this season.

Leake will be facing the Orioles for the first time in his career. In his career, Leake is 4-5 with a 3.16 ERA in interleague play. This season, Leake is 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA in interleague play. The Reds are 11-17 for a loss of 6.02 units in Leake’s 28 starts.

Tillman will be facing the Reds for the first time in his career. In 11 career interleague starts, Tillman is 1-1 with a 5.93 ERA. In five interleague starts this season, Tillman has a 7.56 ERA. The Orioles are 20-9 in Tillman’s 29 starts for a profit of 12.20 units, which is the best mark in the league.

Free MLB Pick: Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles have won nearly two-thirds of Chris Tillman’s starts this season and they have been one of the best teams in the league for quite a while. That should not stop in this outing as the Reds will be looking forward to getting back home and wrapping up what has been a very long six-game road trip with a lot of frustrating games.
