Derek Jeter will play his final home game on Thursday night when the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees meet for the 19th and final time of the season. The Orioles are basically locked into #2 seed for the postseason and will likely face either Oakland or Detroit in the ALDS, depending on who wins the final Wild Card spot. The Yankees will not go to the postseason in Derek Jeter’s final season, marking only the third time in Jeter’s 20-year career that he has not participated in the playoffs.

Kevin Gausman proved to be an effective Major League starting pitcher in his 19 starts for the Orioles and he will make his final start of the regular season on Thursday. The final spot in the ALDS rotation for the Orioles seems to be up for grabs between Gausman and Miguel Gonzalez. The 23-year-old is 7-7 with a 3.57 ERA overall and 7-6 with a 3.28 ERA since he joined the rotation full-time in early June.

Hiroki Kuroda faces an uncertain future at age 39 with free agency on the horizon. The Japanese right-hander came stateside in 2008 and has been a very effective starter in his seven seasons. Kuroda has a 3.25 ERA in 12 starts since the All-Star Break, so somebody is definitely going to take a chance on him over the offseason. He has only walked 12 batters in 74.2 innings over those 12 starts.

Gausman is 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in seven career appearances, two starts, against the Yankees. This season, in the two starts, Gausman is 1-0 with just one run allowed over 12 innings of work. The Orioles are 10-9 in Gausman’s 19 starts for a profit of 1.80 units.

Kuroda is 3-3 with a 2.88 ERA in 10 career starts against the Orioles. In four starts this season, Kuroda is 1-0 with a 2.39 ERA. The Yankees are 14-17 in Kuroda’s 31 starts for a loss of 6.09 units.

Free MLB Pick: New York Yankees

Emotions will run high at Yankee Stadium and the team will want to send Jeter off a winner in his final home game. The Orioles are basically locked into the #2 spot in the AL for the playoffs and that means that some of their key relievers may get some days off in between now and the playoffs. Gausman is pitching with some added pressure of making the ALDS rotation and that may not benefit him in this outing.

Matchup: Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers

MLB Betting Odds From 5Dimes Sportsbook

Probable Starters: MIN: Trevor May (3-5, 8.39) v. DET: Max Scherzer (17-5, 3.19)

Moneyline: Detroit -295

Total: 8

The Detroit Tigers are inching closer to another Central Division title and they’ve got a huge advantage in the pitching matchup on Thursday. The Twins have played the Tigers very tough this season, holding an 8-7 advantage in the season series. This four-game series could be the final series for Twins manager Ron Gardenhire after another 90-plus losing season.

Trevor May has gotten a crash course in pitching to Major League hitters in his first 39.2 innings of work. The righty has one quality start out of eight outings and has an 8.39 ERA overall. He has allowed 77 baserunners in those 39.2 innings and 38 runs. Opposing batters are posting a .327/.407/.503/.910 slash line against May. He has allowed a 30 percent line drive rate in his nine appearances.

Max Scherzer is one of three potential AL Cy Young candidates along with Felix Hernandez and Corey Kluber. Scherzer has a 17-5 record with a 3.19 ERA over 32 starts. He has 243 strikeouts and 59 walks in 214.1 innings of work. Since Scherzer allowed 10 runs in four innings against the Kansas City Royals, he is 9-2 with a 2.64 ERA over 17 starts. He has 132 strikeouts in 110 innings in that span.

May is 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA this season against the Tigers. The Twins are 3-5 in May’s eight starts for a loss of 1.29 units. Scherzer is 8-2 with a 4.53 ERA against the Twins. This season, Scherzer is 2-0 with a 5.00 ERA. The Tigers are 23-9 for a profit of 10.93 units in Scherzer’s 32 starts.

Free MLB Pick: Detroit Tigers

Lay the price. The Tigers are getting amped up for the postseason and this is a huge mismatch. The Tigers are probably going to be over a three-dollar favorite in this matchup at some point, but May isn’t ready for the Majors and the Twins have been awful since the All-Star Break.
