A light Monday of games is on tap to kick off this week. With only seven MLB games and one NHL playoff game, it’s a rare breather for handicappers in order to step back and re-focus for another round of the NBA playoffs, which begins on Tuesday night. It was another busy weekend in the sports world with one NBA Game 7, the Preakness, and the start of the conference finals in the NHL. Sometimes it’s nice to relax and have a night like this with a small card to breakdown. Here are a few trends to help you turn a profit for the evening.

Here are the top sports betting trends for May 18:

MLB: Oakland Athletics at Houston Astros (8:10 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play over in all Oakland games. The over is 26-10 (+16 units) this season.

The Athletics are among the worst defensive teams in Major League Baseball and it shows in their totals record. They have also been one of the better offensive teams in baseball this season. It’s been a strange year for the A’s, but a good season for bettors looking to fire on overs. Drew Pomeranz faces Lance McCullers on Monday night with a total of 8.5 in McCullers’s Major League debut. He has 29 innings of experience at Double-A and misses a lot of bats.

Bonus Trend: Play against Oakland using the money line. The Athletics are 13-26 (-18.3 units) this season.

NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers (8:00 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play against New York using the money line in home games after a three-game unbeaten streak. The Rangers are 40-55 (-50.05 units) since 1992.

The Rangers defied this trend with a Game 1 win on Saturday afternoon by a 2-1 score. A late goal from Dominic Moore propelled the Rangers to victory in their 15th straight one-goal game in the NHL playoffs. They have won seven games this postseason by a 2-1 score. They are favored in the -135 range again on Monday, with a total of 4.5.

Bonus Trend: Play under in NY Rangers games against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season. The under is 41-20 (+20.6 units) over the last two seasons.

MLB: Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox (8:10 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play over in Cleveland games in May. The over is 12-2 (+10 units) this season.

Sunday was a rare under as the Indians offense squandered a bunch of chances early in the game against Nick Martinez. The end result was a 5-1 loss. Chris Sale and Corey Kluber is the top pitching matchup in the league on Monday night and the total is sitting at 7. Under money pushed this total down from 7.5 to 7, so the betting market is expecting the Indians to put one in the under column.

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at Detroit Tigers (7:05 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play on Detroit using the money line in home interleague games. The Tigers are 15-5 (+14.75 units) over the last three seasons.

This trend makes a lot of sense since the powerful Tigers lineup is better equipped for the use of the DH in interleague games than the opposition. The Tigers won two out of three over the St. Louis Cardinals this past weekend in Missouri, but now they host interleague play early in the week against the Brewers. Kyle Lobstein and the Tigers are in the -140 range against Mike Fiers.
