It’s a rare Thursday across Major League Baseball as nearly every MLB team is in action. Most Thursdays are spotted with off days, but a lot of getaway day games and the start of some four-game weekend series provide handicappers with plenty of betting options for May 21. The NHL and NBA playoffs are in action once again, as the Western Conference Finals continue in both leagues. The Golden State Warriors are vying for a 2-0 series lead over the Houston Rockets and the Chicago Blackhawks are hoping to use home ice to their advantage to break a 1-1 series tie against the Anaheim Ducks. Strap in for a fun day of sports betting action as we move a day closer to the weekend.

Here are the top sports betting trends for May 21:

MLB: Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers (1:05 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play on Detroit using the money line in day games. The Tigers are 15-4 (+14.25 units) this season.

A rare Thursday day game to open up a four-game weekend set awaits the Tigers and Astros. David Price takes the ball for the Motor City Kitties against Scott Feldman for the still-surging Houston Astros, who are now 27-14 with the best record in the AL. The Tigers are a comfortable favorite in the -165 range and this line is continuing to climb from overnight and morning money on the home team.

Bonus Trend: Play on Houston using the money line in road games. The Astros are 12-4 (+10.32 units) this season.

MLB: Oakland Athletics at Tampa Bay Rays (7:10 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play over in Oakland games against right-handed starters. The over is 22-8 (+14.1 units) this season.

By their use of platoon advantages, the A’s offense has been clicking quite nicely against right-handed pitchers. The unfortunate thing for the A’s and their fans is that the pitching staff has been bad against basically everybody. Oakland has been an over machine this season and bettors that like this trend will hope for another over in the pitching matchup between Jesse Chavez and Alex Colome.

Bonus Trend: Play against Oakland using the money line in all games. The A’s are 14-28 (-19.55 units) this season.

NBA: Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors (9:00 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play over in Houston road games after the Rockets score 105 or more points. The over is 19-6 (+12.4 units) this season.

Game 1 stayed under the total with a final mark of 216, as the Warriors got off to a slow start. Game 2 is once again lined at 220, despite the status of Dwight Howard. Oddsmakers may actually anticipate a higher scoring game if Howard is ruled out because the Rockets and Warriors will both go small and it will be an up-and-down game with a lot of jump shots. The Rockets have carried over offensive momentum from game to game, as this trend illustrates.

Bonus Trend: Play on Houston using the money line in games versus poor defensive teams allowing 99 or more points per game in the second half of the season. The Rockets are 26-10 (+13.85 units) this season.

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants (3:45 p.m. ET)

Trend: Play on San Francisco using the money line in May games. The Giants are 32-14 (+19.35 units) over the last two seasons.

The Giants have been hot since the return of Hunter Pence to the lineup and they are 13-5 in the month of May with five straight victories. The Giants are +34 in run differential this month after a very slow April with a 9-13 record and a -28 run differential. For whatever reason, the Giants appear to be a little bit of a slow starter, but they’ve turned it on in May in each of the last two seasons. Baseball fans and bettors are in for a real treat today with Clayton Kershaw against Madison Bumgarner. The Giants are in the +110 range.
