Baseball is the only major professional sport going on right now, so it is getting a lot of attention in the betting market. Stay ahead of the books and ahead of the other bettors by making The Bettor’s Box a part of your weekly handicapping routine. Hosted by Adam Burke, this twice-a-week MLB betting podcast can be heard every Monday and Thursday, with important insight and analysis into teams, players, line moves, and so much more.

Listeners of the show can also hit Adam up on Twitter at his handle, @SkatingTripods, to talk baseball betting, topics for the show, or any other sport at BangTheBook. He’s always willing to discuss baseball, as well as the other sports. Don’t hesitate to ask him for more clarification about sabermetrics or about the observations that he has seen in previous games.

Beginning with a look Beyond the Box Score, Adam looked at some surprising series sweeps and a key AL West series. The Atlanta Braves swept the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals swept the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets and Nationals changed places in the NL East once again. The Braves have been a bit of a surprise all season long and this past weekend’s outcome certainly fit the bill. What problems for the Mets need to be corrected quickly?

The Nationals sweep of the Pirates included a Max Scherzer no-hitter and 19 runs of offense from the home team, including a nine-spot on Charlie Morton in the first inning on Sunday. Are the Nationals going to be able to keep this run going when they face the Braves early in the week? That was discussed later in the show.

Oakland picked up a key series win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to continue their quest of climbing back into the AL West standings. The Athletics were discussed last week as a team that could be on the rise and they have won eight of 10. What did this series tell us about the current state of both teams.

After recapping line moves and discussing Monday night’s podcast pick, Adam took a look at the division futures market from 5Dimes. There are some decent values out there in the market right now, including a couple of long shots that are worth a look and a couple of favorites that should maintain their leads through Game 162. It’s important to evaluate where teams are and what kind of flexibility they have to make moves for the stretch run. That’s as important as anything when handicapping futures and Adam did a great job covering that on today’s show.
