The Miami Marlins have been in trouble for a while, and they are going nowhere fast. So it is not as if the injury suffered by Giancarlo Stanton is going to kill their playoff chances. But baseball bettors are not here to wager on their playoff chances, at least not as it applies to this particular game on Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants, as the action gets underway at 7:10 PM ET at Marlins Park. After the first pitch is thrown, customers at BetAnySports get their chance to place wagers on the side, total and various props through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
And throwing the pitches tonight will be Ryan Vogelsong for the Giants, possessor of a 6-5 record and 3.75 ERA. The starter for the Marlins is the struggling Mat Latos (2-5, 5.49), who may be on the trading block.
The Giants are 42-35, and after two straight wins they are right on the heels of the Los Angeles Dodgers, just a half-game behind in the National League West. The Marlins are out of it at 31-46, 11.5 games in back of the Washington Nationals in the NL East. San Francisco currently has the best road record in the National League at 21-15, while Miami is 18-22 at home.
In the baseball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Marlins are the slight favorites:
Miami Marlins (Latos) -110
San Francisco Giants (Vogelsong) +100
Under 7.5 runs -125
Over 7.5 runs +105
Stanton injured himself during an at bat on Saturday, but he stayed in the game. Afterward it was determined that he had a fracture in his wrist, and he has already had surgery for it. The most optimistic view is that he will miss four to six weeks. Stanton was the league leader in both home runs and RBI's, and he is perhaps the most threatening hitter in baseball. Of the six longest homers in the major leagues this season, he has hit four of them.
Naturally, he will miss the All-Star Game, which is a big blow for baseball fans. But what is more significant to BetAnySports customers is the fact that he is missing from a Miami lineup that has had a lot of trouble scoring runs. In fact, the Marlins have been absolutely woeful in their last seven contests, sending just eleven runners across the plate. The only time they have won during that period, interestingly enough, was against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, in the game Stanton was injured.
Stanton, as most baseball bettors are aware, signed the largest contract in the history of North American pro sports during the off-season, worth $325 million over thirteen years. And this came even after he was nailed in the face with a pitch that ended his season in early September. Without him, manager Dan Jennings admits that the team is going to have to play a bit differently on offense, with more "small ball," as it were. The Marlins, who replaced Jennings as the general manager, may also be in "seller's mode" before the July 31 trade deadline, and veteran pitcher Latos, making Tuesday's start, could be someone other teams are interested in. And the injury means Ichiro Suzuki, the future Hall of Famer and famous singles hitter, gets more playing time.
