July is an exciting month in baseball as teams look to position themselves for a playoff run or for the future. We’re still four weeks away from the non-waiver trade deadline, so the focus is still on trying to contend and trying to rack up wins in advance of the All-Star Break. Adam Burke was back on the airwaves with The Bettor’s Box, BangTheBook.com’s exclusive MLB betting podcast. This show is the best in the business, with sabermetric analysis, insight, and betting observations on lines, teams, and more.
Listeners of the show can also hit Adam up on Twitter at his handle, @SkatingTripods, to talk baseball betting, topics for the show, or any other sport at BangTheBook. He’s always willing to discuss baseball, as well as the other sports. Don’t hesitate to ask him for more clarification about sabermetrics or about the observations that he has seen in previous games.
Beginning with a look Beyond the Box Score, there have been some very interesting series this week. The Cleveland Indians starting rotation has done some historic things against the Tampa Bay Rays this week. Their offense has woken up as well. What is the outlook for both of these teams prior to the All-Star Break? Speaking of impressive performances, the Houston Astros swept the Kansas City Royals. Adam talked about the implications of this series for both teams.
Interesting results between the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets, as well as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers were also worth discussing, with series finales on Friday. The Cubs bounced back from a tough weekend against the Cardinals and the Tigers have now fallen to just one game above .500 after an 11-2 start to the season. Thoughts on these teams and their futures were a good segue into the line moves of the week.
You can see betting patterns on a daily basis around Major League Baseball. Line movements are happening on the same players and teams, as well as players with similar statistical performances. Stay ahead of the moves and ahead of the market by taking Adam’s advice and listening to his insights on the betting market. This segment also included his podcast free pick for Thursday night.
During his sabermetric stats discussion, Adam talked about the value of utilizing PITCHf/x data to find reasons why pitchers are struggling. This type of advanced methodology is important for bettors to get an edge over the books and to continue improving as handicappers.
