Despite to losses in a row, the New York Yankees are still holding onto first place in the American League East, and on Wednesday they will be doing battle once again with the Oakland Athletics, who are one of the teams suspected of being in a "selling" mood before the trade deadline, as they are mired in a fifth place in the AL West. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium, and Vietbet customers are going to have the opportunity to place wagers on this contest after it starts, through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
The Yankees lead the division by a game and a half, but quite obviously things are very tight. Baltimore and Toronto in a virtual tie for second place, and Tampa Bay is only 2.5 games back. The Red Sox have put together a little winning streak and they are only five games behind the lead. So obviously any losing streak on the part of the Bronx Bombers is going to be very detrimental for their playoff chances.
Oakland has some pitching, and on Wednesday they will be going with their star southpaw, Scott Kazmir, who is rumored to be one of the people who could be on the trading block. Kazmir is coming off a brilliant outing against the Seattle Mariners and has a 2.56 ERA, although he is only 5-5. The Yankees will go with CC Sabathia, who was passed over in the rotation on the weekend and who comes into this game with a record of 3-8 and an earned run average of 5.59.
In the baseball odds that have been posted on this game by the people at Vietbet, the Yankees are the slight favorites at home:
New York Yankees (Sabathia) -107
Oakland Athletics (Kazmir) -103
Over 8 runs -120
Under 8 runs +100
Kazmir's splits are quite interesting. At home he has been brilliant, with a 1.40 ERA and a WHIP ratio that is under the 1.00 mark. In 57 2/3 innings in Oakland, he has not given up a home run. However, when he goes on the road it's a different story, as he is just 1-3 with a 4.20 ERA, and has surrendered seven round- trippers.
Greatly contributing to Sabathia's poor numbers is the fact that he can't seem to get anybody out in Yankee Stadium. The former Cy Young Award winner has pretty good strikeout numbers in the Bronx, as he has fanned 9.7 batters per nine innings, but his ERA is 8.49 in six starts, and on the season he has allowed 19 home runs, second in the American League.
Vietbet patrons know that they skipped over Sabathia, who was supposed to start on Sunday, and there was a lot that was interpreted from that. But according to manager Joe Girardi, the big left-hander was just "working on some things," and one of those things was his cut fastball, which needs to get better against right-handed hitters, who have clearly lit him up (.329 average).
The team says Sabathia is healthy, and the pitcher echoes that. So any suspicion of lingering injury issues can be thrown out the window. The last time he took the mound he threw 95 pitches over 7 1/3 innings, giving up a pair of home runs and four runs overall. People who are backing the Yankees are hopeful that Sabathia, who is said to have taken being passed over as a quasi-insult, will roar back with a big effort.
That's exactly what Kazmir gave the A's last time out, as he went eight scoreless innings against Seattle and gave up only two hits.
