The Yankees vs Red Sox rivalry continues this weekend, when the New York Yankees go to Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox. In the past, the Yankees vs Sox rivalry was the marquee matchup in baseball, because both teams were usually the contenders to make it to the World Series out of the American League, but now, both teams will be happy just to make the playoffs.
The first game of the three game series begins on Friday, July 10, and we are providing you with a preview of the game, to help you make well informed bets. In this game, the Yankees will give Michael Pineda the start, while the Red Sox counter with Clay Buchholz.
Pineda has an 8-5 record and a 3.79 ERA, which means that he has pitched well so far this season. Prior to his last start, he was 1-3 in his past four starts, and had allowed 16 earned runs in those games. He turned things around in his last start, and went seven innings without allowing a run against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was unable to get the decision in the game, but his performance was enough to help the Yankees get the win. The team will be hoping for a similar performance against their bitter rivals
Clay Buchholz has a 7-6 record with a 3.27 ERA, but his stats are a little misleading. He had a slow start to the season, but is currently one of the hottest pitchers in baseball. After a 2-6 start to the season, he is currently 5-0 in his last seven starts, with two no decisions. During that stretch, he allowed 11 runs, eight of which came in the two no decisions that he had, and three in his last five games. The Red Sox have also gone 6-1 in those starts, which is one of the biggest reasons for their recent turnaround.
Heading into Friday’s game, the Yankees have a 5.5 game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East, and they are currently on a two game winning streak, after winning two out of three against the Oakland A’s in their last series. They have been successful this season thanks to their offense, which has been one of the best in baseball. Mark Teixeira, who has battled injuries over the past few years is finally healthy, and leads the team with 22 homers and 62 RBIs. As a team, they are in the top 10 of most major offensive categories, unfortunately, their pitching staff hasn’t been consistent. C.C. Sabathia, who was their best pitcher for a period of years, looks like a shell of his former self, and isn’t dominating like he used to anymore. As a group, their pitching staff has a 4.01 ERA, which is 21st in the league.
The Boston Red Sox are quietly working their way back up the standings, and have a good opportunity to reduce their deficit in the division, by defeating the Yankees in this series. They will need to start by taking the first game on Friday, which will extend their current winning streak to five games. Like the Yankees, they have a very good offense, led by Hanley Ramirez, who has 18 homers and 43 RBIs. They too have most of their issues coming from their pitching staff, which is even worse than New York’s, with their pitchers having a 4.45 ERA for the year.

My Pick: When it comes to the New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox, the records don’t really matter, so there’s no point trying to use it to determine the winner. What does matter right now is the way Clay Buchholz is pitching, which will be the ultimate difference maker. I think the Yankees will have a tough time scoring runs against him, and it will be the reason they lose to Boston on Friday night.
