With the MLB All-Star Break in the rearview mirror, Adam Burke was back on the air breaking down the current landscape in Major League Baseball on The Bettor’s Box. Our wildly popular MLB betting podcast goes deeper into the game of baseball than any other show. This is one of the toughest times of the season to bet on baseball because of all of the trade deadline rumors and that’s why a podcast like this is so important to add to your handicapping routine.
Listeners of the show can also hit Adam up on Twitter at his handle, @SkatingTripods, to talk baseball betting, topics for the show, or any other sport at BangTheBook. He’s always willing to discuss baseball, as well as the other sports. Don’t hesitate to ask him for more clarification about sabermetrics or about the observations that he has seen in previous games.
The second half began with some interesting results. On the recurring “Beyond the Box Score” segment, Adam took a look at what happened last weekend. The Baltimore Orioles took two out of three from the Detroit Tigers after losing the first game on Friday night. As Adam discussed on the show, the Tigers are in a very tough position right now and have fallen below .500 for the first time this season. What does the near future hold for these two teams?
In other action, the Pittsburgh Pirates were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers. This series told us a lot about the current state of both teams. The Brewers have won 16 of their last 22 and seem to have embraced the role of spoiler after getting off to a terrible start. The Pirates have some issues of their own right now and another injury could have an impact on their plans over the next couple of weeks.
A look around the line moves from the weekend allowed listeners to ride along as Adam navigated the betting market waters. It’s always important to look at line moves to get a feel for what the oddsmakers and bettors are thinking. Trends and tendencies have been present all season and this past weekend was no different. Along with a look at line moves, Adam had his pick for Monday night.
Regression analysis is a big part of this show and one of the easiest ways to spot potential betting opportunities is by looking at the ERA-FIP discrepancies of pitchers. To open up the second half, Adam took a look at 10 pitchers, five with high ERAs and lower FIPs and five with low ERAs and higher FIPs and gave some insight into which ones to back and which ones to avoid.
With a look ahead at the early part of the week and additional thoughts on the trade deadline, this was a great show for listeners of all skill levels and bankrolls.
