It’s Thursday and that means that you have eagerly been waiting at your computer or on your smartphone for the latest edition of The Bettor’s Box. Host Adam Burke delivered in a big way with another excellent edition of BangTheBook’s MLB betting podcast. There was a lot to discuss on this show as teams are jockeying for position in advance of the trade deadline and others are trying to navigate through injuries. The observations and thoughts on this show are second to none in the podcast world and it should be a regular part of your handicapping routine.

Listeners of the show can also hit Adam up on Twitter at his handle, @SkatingTripods, to talk baseball betting, topics for the show, or any other sport at BangTheBook. He’s always willing to discuss baseball, as well as the other sports. Don’t hesitate to ask him for more clarification about sabermetrics or about the observations that he has seen in previous games.

After thanking listeners for their loyalty to BangTheBook while we underwent some critical site maintenance, the baseball insights came flying faster than a Jose Fernandez fastball. A look “Beyond the Box Score” shed some light on some of the key series from early in the week, including Royals/Pirates, Mets/Nationals, and Orioles/Yankees. All of these series had some important implications for different reasons, especially the two division rivalries.

Examining the betting market is a critical part of every episode. On each show, Adam runs down the line moves that occurred between shows with some insight into what the oddsmakers and the bettors are thinking. Most of these line moves are going to happen over and over again, which will help listeners get some idea of where the lines will go and whether or not they can wait to bet on them. Every cent matters! Make sure to listen for Thursday night’s free podcast pick.

A new sabermetric stat has captivated the analytics community since it was put into practice a few months ago. cFIP, or contextual FIP, has become one of the best ERA estimators available. Some people that Adam greatly respects swear by the statistic and its improved accuracy because there are some elements that make it different from other run estimators like xFIP and SIERA. Adam had some great thoughts about the future of baseball and what statistics like this do for the game.

Finally, to wrap up the show, a look at what to watch for over the weekend as players sit on pins and needles while waiting to find out if they have been traded or not. Some big series are coming up this weekend that may decide the direction that certain teams will take.
