We are in the second half of the MLB, and we have a full slate of games today. Of all the games being played today, there are three games that stand out, and we are going to take a closer look at them.
Boston Red Sox vs Houston Astros
The Boston Red Sox are currently on a seven game losing streak, and they have fallen 11 games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East, and need to get a win in Houston to snap the streak, and try to stay in the division race.
The Astros have lost their division lead, and now trail the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West by two games. A win against Boston will reduce the Angels lead in the division.
The Red Sox will give Wade Miley the start, while the Astros will go with Lance McCullers.
Miley is 8-8 for the season, with a 4.49 ERA. He pitched 7 innings without allowing a run in his last start, and the Red Sox will be hoping for a similar performance.
McCullers is 4-3 with a 2.52 ERA this year. He had allowed only one run per game in his previous three starts, before allowing four runs in his last start. The team will be hoping he can rebound against the Red Sox.
Boston's biggest strength all season has been their offense, but they havent hit the ball well lately. They will need to pick things up, because their pitching rotation has struggled all year.
The Astros have won four of their last five games, and will try to keep the momentum going and sweep the Red Sox.
My Pick: The Houston Astros will be too much for the struggling Red Sox, and they will complete the sweep.
Milwaukee Brewers vs Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Milwaukee Brewers will be trying to continue their recent run of success when they face the Diamondbacks, who have lost their last three series.
The Brewers will send Mike Fiers to the mound, while the Diamondbacks will send Zack Godley to the mound.
Mike Fiers is 5-7 with a 3.79 ERA for the season. He is 2-0 in his last five starts, with three no decisions, but the team has won all five games.
Zack Godley will be making his first pro start, so he doesnt have any stats yet. The Diamondbacks will be hoping that he doesnt get overwhelmed in his big league debut.
Despite their recent run, the Brewers are still 18.5 games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central, but if they can keep their recent run going, they may have a chance at contending for one of the Wildcard spots.
The Diamondbacks are 9.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, but their chances of catching up to the division leaders seem to be dwindling each day due to the fact that they have lost eight of their last nine games.
My Pick: The Milwaukee Brewers will take advantage of the rookie pitcher, and win the game.
Miami Marlins vs San Diego Padres.
The Miami Marlins are currently on a two game winning streak, and they would like to keep it going, against a Sand Diego team that has lost two straight games.
The Marlins will give Tom Koehler the start, while the Padres will start Tyson Ross.
Tom Koehler is 7-6 with a 3.38 ERA, he is 3-2 in his last five starts, but he lost his last two starts. Despite losing those starts, he pitched very well, and allowed a combined three runs in the two starts.
Tyson Ross is 6-7 with a 3.38 ERA, he is 3-0 in his last six starts, with three no decisions, and the team is 5-1 in those starts.
The Marlins have been without their best player in Giancarlo Stanton, but they are still competing every night. Their pitching staff has performed well in recent games, and the team is hoping that they will continue doing so against the Padres.
The Padres have won five of their last seven games, but lost their last two games. They are one of the worst hitting teams in the league, but their starting pitchers have bailed them out on numerous occasions this season, and have 56 quality starts, which is 6th in the league.
My Pick: The Padres will snap their two game losing streak with a win against Miami.
