Neither the Cleveland Indians nor the Oakland Athletics are making much hay lately in their respective division races, As the trade deadline fast approaches, however, lots of eyes are on what they might do as they prepare to begin a four-game series at the O.co Coliseum with a starting time of 10:05 PM ET. Vietbet customers can obviously place wagers before the event, but even after the opening pitch, they can be very active participants in making their baseball picks as the action progresses, as this is made possible through Live Betting Extra.
Both clubs are mired in last place, and they are slumping. Cleveland has lost six of its last seven games, while Oakland has dropped five of six. On Thursday, the Indians will be going with Carlos Carrasco (10-8, 4.26 ERA), who has been hit hard in two of his last four starts but has also shown himself capable of some very imposing performances. The A's turn to Chris Bassitt (0-3, 2.94 ERA), who, to put it mildly, has pitched in some bad luck.
In the baseball odds posted on this game at Vietbet, the Indians are favored as the road club:
Cleveland Indians (Carrasco) -131
Oakland Athletics (Bassitt) +121
Over 7 runs -110
Under 7 runs -110
Cleveland has just finished up a seven-game homestand, and they had come up empty until last night's game against the team that has the best record in the American League.
The Indians departed town in style, blasting out 18 hits in a 12-1 drubbing of the division-leading Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night, behind last year's Cy Young winner, Corey Kluber. But that was an exception to the rule, which is that Cleveland has been hurting for offense, scoring just ten runs in the previous six games, all of which they lost. They are now sitting with a 46-54 record, which puts them in last place in the AL Central, fifteen games behind the lead. Interestingly enough, however, the Tribe is just six games out of the second wild card spot. But Vietbet patrons have seen them start to unload. Just today they traded outfielder Brandon Moss (15 HR, 50 RBI), who went to last year's All-Star Game as a member of the A's, to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a Single-A pitcher.
Oakland is 45-57, and they trail the AL West-leading Houston Astros by a dozen games. They are eight games in back of the Minnesota Twins, who have a hold, for the time being, on the AL's final available wild card. The Athletics have been dumping personnel of late; they already traded starting pitcher Scott Kazmir to the Astros and reliever Tyler Clippard to the Miami Marlins, as well as the do-everything Ben Zobrist, who went off to the Royals.
Bassitt has made four starts, and even though it is a small sampling, he seems to have shown more ability to get guys out in that role than he did as a reliever. His ERA in those starts is 2.74 with a WHIP ratio of 1.04. Shockingly, he has walked nine batters in 10-2/3 innings of relief, but he has issued just two bases on balls in 23 innings as a starter, so Vietbet customers should take note.
Five nights ago, Carrasco was roughed up by the light-hitting Chicago White Sox, removed after allowing six runs four innings. Houston also banged him around on July 6 (for five runs and ten hits in four innings). In between, he faced the A's, giving up two runs in seven innings and striking out seven. That night he faced Bassitt, who allowed two runs in 6-1/3 innings. Carrasco's best outing of the season came on July 1, when he held the Tampa Bay Rays to a single hit over 8-2/3 innings, fanning thirteen. He is averaging 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
In a sense, this game represents "strength vs. weakness." The Indians, even as a last-place club, have the third best road record in the AL (26-22), while the Athletics are just 21-29 at the O.co Coliseum, and only three AL teams have a worse mark on their home turf.
