Europa League Match of the Day – Atalanta vs. Dortmund 2/22/2018

The first leg at Signal Iduna Park was a true spectacle, showing everything you can demand from a football match, so we’re hoping for another thrilling game when Atalanta and Dortmund lock horns this Thursday, February 22nd, 2018, at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 32. The bookmakers set Atalanta as +135 favorites to win at home, while the visitors are still -200 favorites to reach the next round thanks to a 3-2 victory in the first leg, so the odds also suggest it is going to be a great battle in this clash, as the price on both teams to score is set at -210.

The Goddess has won just one out of the last five matches in all competitions (1-0 against Chievo at home) along with two draws and two losses, including a 3-2 defeat against Dortmund last Thursday. It was a tremendous game as Dortmund had a 1-0 lead after the first half, but Atalanta made a brilliant upheaval at the start of the second half thanks to Josip Ilicic’s brace in just five minutes. However, the Goddess couldn’t stand the pressure, and the hosts made another shift getting the victory in the dying minutes of the game. Atalanta took nine shots toward Dortmund’s goalkeeper, having the ball on their feet for 45% of the time with 80% of pass accuracy, showing they can play equally with the Black and Yellows.

Atalanta played 35 games so far in the 2017/2018, recording 16 wins, 10 draws and nine losses with a 57:39 goal difference which is 2.74 goals per contest on average. The Goddess topped the Europa League Group E table with 14 points, a 14:4 goal difference, and a 4-2-0 record, ahead of Lyon, Everton, and Apollon Limassol. This season at home, Atalanta has recorded ten wins, four stalemates and four defeats with a 30:16 goal difference, while a half of these 18 matches had at least three goals in the total.

Josip Ilicic is currently the team’s top scorer with 11 goals in 32 appearances thus far, while another midfielder is right behind him as Bryan Cristante netted ten times this season also in 32 apps. The forward Papu Gomez is the team’s best assist-maker with nine dishes in 29 matches, adding seven goals to his name, while Ilicic made eight assists so far. You should also keep your eye on a 22-year old striker Andrea Petagna who scored five goals in 31 apps along with six dishes for his teammates. The manager Gian Piero Gasperini can field his best eleven, as there are no injury problems among the squad.

The Black and Yellows allowed too many scoring chances to their opponents in the first leg, luckily earning the victory as Michy Batshuayi scored the winner in the stoppage time of the second half. It was his second of the game, while Batshuayi bagged five goals in four appearances for a new club, as he arrived in Dortmund this winter from Chelsea. However, the Black and Yellows are still unbeaten in 2018, recording four victories and three draws, keeping the clean sheet three times in the process.

Dortmund played 34 games so far this season, recording 14 wins, nine draws, and 11 losses with a 70:49 goal difference, which is 3.5 goals per contest on average. The Black and Yellows finished in the third spot of the Champions League Group H table with only two points, a 7:13 goal difference, and a 0-2-4 record, way behind Tottenham and Real Madrid, and in front of APOEL due to a better H2H record. In 18 matches on the road this season, Dortmund has recorded eight wins, five draws and five losses with a 35:22 goal difference, while 12 out of these 18 encounters had at least three goals in the total.

Since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club last month to join Arsenal, three players became the team’s top scorers with six goals each – Shinji Kagawa, Andriy Yarmolenko, and Maximilian Philipp, while all these three guys will probably miss the second leg with Atalanta due to injuries, so Michy Batshuayi will be Dortmund’s main weapon in the final third. Kagawa is the team’s best assist-maker with seven dishes on his account, while Mario Gotze made six dishes in 21 appearances this season, two of them against Atalanta last Thursday.

Atalanta vs. Dortmund – Betting Trends and Match Prediction

  • Atalanta won just one out of the last five games overall
  • Atalanta won one out of the previous five matches at home
  • Atalanta kept the clean sheet twice in the last 10 games
  • Dortmund won four matches in a row overall
  • Dortmund is unbeaten in all their seven games in 2018
  • 12 out of 18 Dortmund’s away matches had at least three goals in the total

The bookies are firmly sure we will see at least a couple of goals in this one, and I can only agree, despite Atalanta needs a 1-0 victory to reach the next round. I believe Dortmund will find the net at least once, which should lead this match in the over. As well, I’m backing the Black and Yellows to qualify for the Round of 16, but Atalanta showed us many times this season they are capable of upsetting the stronger teams.
