The NFL Playoff Previews cover all of the teams heading to the post-season. This set of previews will discuss why a team will or will not win the Superbowl and offer a prediction on the chances to win the conference and the big game as well as the latest future odds. Checkout the Superbowl Prediction page for more NFL playoff team previews.

Why the Vikings will win the Superbowl: The Vikings will win the Superbowl because they finally got a quarterback. The addition of Brett Favre has allowed this team to mix it up on offense and take the pressure of Adrian Peterson. The defense is rock solid and ranks in the top ten in defending the run and with the second seed in the NFC a distinct possibility they will have plenty of home games.

The Vikings will get a first round bye and that will give this time plenty of time to rest and get ready for the next opponent that they will face. This will help any team but will be a big help with the Vikings since they have an older quarterback and the team has some nagging injuries.

Numbers don’t lie and the Vikings rank 4th in the entire league in red zone scoring. When they get in the red zone they leave with points and this is very big when it comes to the playoffs. Only one other NFC possible playoff team ranks above them in total defense and that is the Dallas Cowboys. If the Cowboys were to lose in the first round the Vikings would be the best defensive team left in the NFC.

The Saints have home field advantage but they proved against the Cowboys that they are vulnerable at home. Drew Brees folded under pressure and the defense was vulnerable to the run. They are one upset of the Saints from having home field advantage throughout.

Why the Vikings will not win the Superbowl:  The Vikings need to get home field advantage if they even want a shot at winning the superbowl this year. They have not played well on the road and their record is inflated because of it.

They are 4-3 on the road this year and those four wins were at Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, and Green Bay. Only one of those opponents is respectable and Minnesota had extra motivation to win at Green Bay. The losses were against Pittsburgh, Carolina and Arizona and it showed just what kind of problems the Vikings have on the road.

Another reason they don’t advance to the big game is the passing defense. It is ranked just 16th in the league and since it looks like the road to the big game will go through Drew Brees that is not good news for Viking fans.

The Vikings are 17th in the NFL in Penalty yards per game because they get so many per game. As of now besides Green Bay that is worse than any other team in the NFC that could make the playoffs. The Vikings were exposed against the Panthers. They showed how weak they are to the pass rush and how the offense could just throw the ball up and if they had any decent receivers they could score in big chunks.

The Vikings got away from running the ball. At the beginning of the year the Vikings were great at running the ball but now Brett Favre has taken over the game with last minute audible calls changing the play from run to pass. They are currently 13th in the league in rushing yards per game behind other playoff contenders, Dallas and New Orleans. They have to get back to the run to go to the big game if it’s not too late already.

The final hurdle to the big game is coaching. While Brad Childress has been a decent coach for the Minnesota Vikings he is an old school type of guy. He believes in defense and rushing the ball effectively something that the Vikings had done very well. Now with Brett Favre he holds the trump card and has been given the keys to the team since he can change plays at the line of scrimmage. This has already led to controversy and it may lead to both individuals trying to out call the other and not worrying about the opposition. This is a situation that needs to be straightened out before they get to the playoffs.

Current Odds from Diamond Sportsbook for the Minnesota Vikings in the Playoffs

Odds to win the NFC: +410

Odds to win the Superbowl: +825

Prediction: The Vikings will not win the Superbowl or the NFC.

The road play is horrible and the Saints are the cream of the crop and may have the best home field advantage in the game. While the Vikings have an excellent defense the offense is struggling with pass protection and that could lead to an injured Brett Favre or force him into turning over the ball.

The Vikings need a big lead to run the offense through Adrian Peterson. The last minute audible calling by Brett Favre has caused problems with head coach Brad Childress already and that should only get worse in the playoffs. This will allow defenses to stop the run by stacking the box and prepare the rush for Favre when the game is getting out of hand. The Vikings have too many things going against them to win the NFC this year. When placing a wager on futures in the NFL it is very important to look at the intangibles that a team posses as they head into the playoffs. Right now there are too many negatives and not enough positives for the Minnesota Vikings to take a chance on a future wager.
