Updated 12/28/09 - At Bangthebook.com every week we will announce our own top ten in the NFL Power Rankings. The Rankings reflect the play from the previous week as well as the outlook on the season. Here are the rankings after three weeks of football.

1. Indianapolis Colts—the Colts got their first loss of the season but let’s face it they gave this game to the Jets. The move may prove costly in the playoffs but right now this team is still the best in the league in my book.

2. San Diego Chargers—the Chargers trounced the Titans on the road and now are playing better football than almost anyone in the league. They are a complete team on offense and defense.

3. Philadelphia Eagles-the Eagles had a big lead against the Broncos and almost let it slip away before closing the door late in the game. This team has the experience to play in the big game and right now McNabb has infused the right plays with younger players to make a difference.

4. New Orleans Saints—the Saints were ahead of the Bucs by 17 points before blowing a big lead and losing the game. Panic has begun to set in for the Saints and their faithful but fear not, this team is too good to go quietly in the post season.

5. Minnesota Vikings--Brett Favre and the Vikings are another team that is under the microscope for the play of late. They have lost some big game on national television and squandered a chance at home field.

6.  New England Patriots—the Patriots won in blowout fashion against the Jaguars and played the most complete game all season long. The defense played well and Tom Brady was near perfect as he hooked up with Moss on more than one occasion. The Patriots look ready for a playoff push.

7. Cincinnati Bengals—the Bengals have been through a lot this year with the death of some key members of the family. They have come through it all and now have clinched the North. When it comes to surprise teams this year the Bengals have to be one of them.

8. Arizona Cardinals—the Cardinals are quietly a solid 10-5 team that is getting it done. Granted they played in the weak west division but too many people are forgetting this team was in the super bowl a year ago.

9. Green Bay Packers—the Packers reserved their spot in the playoffs and are red hot heading into the post season. If not for a last second loss to the Steelers they would be on a great winning streak and Rogers is having a MVP type of season.

10. Dallas Cowboys-The Cowboys are winning the games they are supposed and there is no more talk about a December collapse. Tony Romo is not turning the ball over and that has led this team to the playoffs.

12/21/09

1. Indianapolis Colts—the Colts won a close one on the road in Jacksonville. With the loss that the Saints took there is no disputing that the Colts are the best team in the league right now.

2. New Orleans Saints—the Saints looked, well, beatable. The defense was torched all night and Drew Brees seemed to be under throwing his receivers. They had a late charge but it was not enough. This loss may be a blessing down the road with the pressure off to go unbeaten.

3. San Diego Chargers—the Chargers beat a Bengals team that was emotionally charged and ready to win one for Chris Henry. The Chargers now have locked down a #2 seed in the NFL playoffs and are ready for the playoffs.

4. Minnesota Vikings--Brett Favre and the Vikings took a beating in Carolina Sunday night. The chink in the armor is playing on the road putting pressure on Favre. Now with some problems surfacing with Childress this could be the beginning of the end.

5. Philadelphia Eagles-the Eagles are soaring to the top of the best division in football. Sooner or later teams have to start and try to cover Desean Jackson. He is one of the best deep threats in the league.

6. Cincinnati Bengals—the Bengals lost a tough game on the road. This loss can be excused with what they have had to deal with this week and the fact that they were playing on the road against the second best team in the NFL.

7. Dallas Cowboys-The Cowboys won a huge game against the undefeated Saints. It stopped the December swoon and it may give them the momentum to make the playoffs as a wildcard.

8. New England Patriots—the Patriots won a sloppy game in Buffalo but it may be enough to lock down the AFC East. The Jets and the Dolphins lost bug games on Sunday giving the Patriots the edge in the East.

9. Baltimore Ravens—the Ravens have been winning with offense and Flacco and Ray rice look like they can carry this team to the playoffs. A huge game against the Steelers this week may determine if this team is ready to go to the next level.

10. Green Bay Packers—the Packers lost a heartbreaker in Pittsburgh on the last play of the game. They are still the favorite to make the playoffs but they have to start cutting back on all of the penalties.

12/15/09

1. New Orleans Saints—the Saints won a close one against the Falcons and it proves that every team is looking to knock off the undefeated Saints. This week against the Cowboys on a short week could be the toughest challenge left on the schedule.

2. Indianapolis Colts—the Colts took on a tough Denver team looking for the playoffs. The Colts were up to the challenge and held off a late rally to beat the Broncos. The secondary is still suspect as they gave up 21 receptions to Brandon Marshall. The Jags get a shot at the Colts this week.

3. Minnesota Vikings-Brett Favre and the Vikings rebounded off a tough loss to the Cardinals and took down a very impressive Bengal team. Antoine Winfield came back to the lineup and the defense responded by holding the Bengals to just ten points.

4. San Diego Chargers—the Chargers started off slow but rebounded in a very big way with a upset win at Dallas. This may finally be the year that Norv Turner makes a solid run in the playoffs. The Chargers are flying high and other teams in the league have to take notice.

5. Cincinnati Bengals—the Bengals may have lost this week, but Minnesota is a tough place to go and play. They have to fix the useless penalties and get another wide out besides Ohco cinco involved if they want to go deep in the playoffs.

6. Philadelphia Eagles—the Eagles got a very big win over the Giants and that combined with the Cowboys loss puts them atop the NFC East. They control their own destiny and if they keep playing like this they will go deep in the post season.

7. New England Patriots—the Patriots beat the Panthers but did not look good doing it. Now with rumors of Randy Moss quitting on the team is some more bad news. The Patriots look like a shell of the former championship teams of the past.

8. Arizona Cardinals—the Cardinals missed a chance to clinch as they lost a tough Monday night game on the road. Turnovers and the health of Kurt Warner is the secret to beating this team. Thankfully the play in a week division.

9. Green Bay Packers—the Packers won a tough game on the road against a division rival and are starting to make other teams take notice. They are on an impressive win streak and control their own destiny in the playoffs.

10. Dallas Cowboys—the Cowboys seem to be crumbling in December again like they have in the past. There is still time to recover and make the playoffs but it starts with trying to win in December, on the road, against the undefeated Saints. They lose here and changes to the coaching staff will be made.

12/8/09

1. New Orleans Saints—the Saints are not making it look easy lately as they have to come from behind to win close games. This letdown may have been expected but you have to hand it to the Saints they still found a way to win.

2. Indianapolis Colts—the Colts won another game in easy fashion against a red-hot Titans team. They also tied a regular season winning streak with 21 games yet you hear more about the Saints. Will the Colts use that as motivation?

3. San Diego Chargers—The Chargers are quietly playing some very good football. They are avoiding letdowns and playing full games and clicking on offense. The West seems like a lock but you really have to wonder just how far this team can go. For a team on a winning streak they are flying under the radar.

4. Minnesota Vikings--Brett Favre and the Vikings finally lost a game in Arizona. They were trounced on the road and AP was held to just 19 yards against the Cardinals. You have to wonder how this team will be able to play on the road in the playoffs.

5. Cincinnati Bengals—the Bengals keep winning and the rest of the North keep losing. It looks the Bengals will win the division and Marvin Lewis is on the verge of becoming the franchise’s winningest coach.

6.  Philadelphia Eagles-the Eagles tore the Falcons a new one and ran through that team like they were one of the league’s worst. They control their own destiny and can get in the playoffs if they win out, but look for the Eagles to turn up the heat in the East.

7. Dallas Cowboys-The Cowboys lost a crucial game on the road to the Giants and that kept them alive for a playoff berth. The real question is will Tony Romo and the boys have their usual collapse in December or was this game just a fluke?

8. Arizona Cardinals—the Cardinals hammered the Vikings in Arizona and finally everyone is seeing the team that went to a Superbowl a year ago. Could that be the win that jump starts this team and gets them back to the big game?

9. Green Bay Packers—the Packers are putting it together and now have won four straight. The defense is playing well and knows how to get the other team to turnover the ball. Aaron Rodgers is looking like an MVP.

10. New England Patriots—the Patriots followed up a bad loss to the Saints with a worse one to the Dolphins. This team is in turmoil and the defense has been exposed. This loss let the Dolphins back into the race for the East. If the Patriots don’t wake up soon they could miss the post season.

12/2/09

1. New Orleans Saints—the Saints won again in convincing fashion but this time it was against one of the best team in football, the New England Patriots. The Saints now have the respect they were looking for and are deserving of the #1 spot.

2. Indianapolis Colts—the Colts had yet another come from behind win. They are not getting as much fanfare since they always do well, but Peyton Manning and the Colts are having one of the best years in Colts history.

3. Minnesota Vikings--Brett Favre and the Vikings took care of the Bears by double digits. If not for one loss the Vikings would be in the same category as the Colts and the Saints.

4. San Diego Chargers—The Chargers crushed the Chiefs as well they should but what might be more impressive is the quiet run they have made to become one of the best teams in the AFC.

5. Cincinnati Bengals—the Bengals rebounded from a tough loss to Oakland to beat the lowly Browns. The win finished an undefeated run in division and the rebirth of Larry Johnson is helping ths team as they head towards the playoffs.

6. Dallas Cowboys-The Cowboys finally got the offense on track against the Raiders on turkey day. In order to stay one of the top teams in the league they will need that offense to be more consistent against some of the better teams in the league.

7. Philadelphia Eagles-the Eagles won a close game against the Redskins and had to come from behind to do it. The Eagles now need to make sure they finish the season strong if they want to catch the Cowboys.

8. New England Patriots—the Patriots lost badly against the Saints which is not a bad thing. However the secondary was exposed and the road record proves that the Patriots have some work to do if they want to go deep in the playoffs.

9. Green Bay Packers—the Packers took care of business in Detroit and Aaron Rodgers is having one of the best years of his young career. They control their own destiny for the wildcard and need to finish strong.

10. Arizona Cardinals—the Cardinals lost a tough game on the road after giving up the lead. Kurt Warner has some health concerns that may be tough for this team. Matt Leinart will have to learn quickly to keep them atop the West.

11/25

1. New Orleans Saints—the Saints won again in convincing fashion. Every week they get the best effort from the other team looking to give the Saints their first loss of the season. So far the Saints have risen to the occasion but get their toughest challenge this week against the Patriots.

2. Indianapolis Colts—the Colts are one of the most underrated undefeated teams in recent history. They keep winning week in and week out although everyone keeps picking against them.

3. Minnesota Vikings--Brett Favre and the Vikings are starting to win games in blowout fashion and the defense will make them a super bowl contender. Is it possible that Favre is looking more and more like an MVP?

4. New England Patriots—the Patriots got revenge against the Jets after losing early in the season. The win but the 4th down call debacle behind them,  but if they want to be considered one of the best this year they will need to beat the Saints this week.

5. Arizona Cardinals--Don’t laugh the Cardinals have regrouped and are an impressive 7-3. This is the same team that went to the superbowl last year and look they can make another run. A team that can win on the road is a good one.

6. San Diego Chargers—The Chargers demolished the Broncos and laid claim to the AFC West. The heat is off Norv Turner and they are winning big games this year. With an easy route to the playoffs this team can be dangerous.

7. Cincinnati Bengals—The Bengals lost to Oakland over the weekend and that is exactly the type of game they want to win if they want to be one of the elite in the AFC. The letdown has caught them twice this year.

8. Dallas Cowboys-The Cowboys beat the Redskins but it was not one of their best games. They need to get the offense on track and keep Romo healthy if they want to stay atop the rugged NFC East.

9. Philadelphia Eagles-These last two spots are up for grabs but for now we will reward the Eagles with the 9th spot. They won a close game on the road and Mcnabb is again the heart and soul of this team.

10. Pittsburgh Steelers-With all apologies to the Packers and the Giants, this spot will go to the Steelers. They were caught in looking ahead to Baltimore and have to stop playing down to their competition.

11/15/09

1. New Orleans Saints —the Saints retain the top spot after getting another come from behind win against the Panthers. With the easiest schedule left in all of football, the Saints should stay atop the rankings.

2. Indianapolis Colts —the Colts got a very tough challenge from the Texans and if not for a missed field goal then the Colts may have suffered the first loss of the season. Good teams just find a way to win and they will have to do it again against the Patriots this week.

3. Minnesota Vikings -Brett Favre and the Vikings enjoyed a well deserved week off after beating the packers and will keep the third spot in the rankings. They should stay here as they host the hapless Lions this week at home.

4. New England Patriots —the Patriots got a big win against the Dolphins, a team that always seems to play well against them. There is no rest for this team as they face the top two teams in the rankings in the weeks ahead starting with Peyton Manning and the Colts.

5. Cincinnati Bengals —the Bengals were three point dogs against the Ravens at home and came out and demolished the birds sweeping the season series. Now to stay in the top five rankings they will have to show up this week in a game at Pittsburgh.

6. Pittsburgh Steelers —the Steelers exposed the Broncos and ran all over them on Monday night. The Steelers are playing like defending champions and have a chance to make claim to the division this week when they play the Bengals.

7. Dallas Cowboys —for all the critics that thought Dallas was a fluke and only played well at home, it is time to take notice. The Eagles were playing very well but it was the Cowboys who shut them down on defense and got a big division win on the road.

8. Denver Broncos —the Broncos slip in the rankings now that they have lost two straight. However they did lose to two very powerful defensive teams. They need to rebound if they want to stay in the rankings because the formula to beating them is out there.

9. Arizona Cardinals —the Cardinals have not played consistent football all year long but they do seem to know how to win on the road. They crushed the Bear this week and now stand alone atop the West.

10. San Diego Chargers
Last Week:

1. New Orleans Saints — the Saints have always been known to have a deadly offense, but last night against the Falcons they were got up in a duel. It was the surprising ball hawking defense that had picked it up and is part of why they are the best team in the NFL.

2. Indianapolis Colts—if I were to tell you that Peyton Manning did not have a touchdown pass you might think they lost against the niners. Instead the Colts got a true challenge but did what it took to get the win and stay undefeated.

3. Minnesota Vikings-Brett Favre and the Vikings got what could be his biggest win in a long time showing up his old team and looking good while he did it. The pass defense may be a bit suspect after almost squandering a lead but right now this team is solid.

4. New England Patriots—the Patriots had a bye week and will be well rested to play the Dolphins this week. This spot seems a bit high for a Patriot team that has been inconsistent, but a stretch of tough games in the next few weeks will solidify the spot or expose them.

5. Denver Broncos-The Broncos may have lost but they still deserve a spot in the top ten. The Ravens defense looked unreal and there are not too many teams in the NFL that could have won in Baltimore with the way they played. The upcoming game against the Steelers at home will be a good test for this team.

6. Cincinnati Bengals—the Bengals are off a bye week but this begins a crucial start of the schedule which should show if they have made it to the next level. A game against the Ravens followed up with a game against Pittsburgh with both teams seeking revenge will be the toughest stretch of the season.

7. Pittsburgh Steelers—the Steelers have been winning ugly and getting leads and letting other teams find a way to get back into it. The bye week should help them focus for a major tilt in the AFC playoff positioning race when they head to Denver.

8. Dallas Cowboys—is the panic over in Dallas yet? It should be because Dallas is beating up on the teams should and the offense is clicking on all cylinders. The emergence of Austin Miles helps as he is headed to a pro-bowl season.

9. Baltimore Ravens—if the Ravens defense can play like they did against Denver then the league should take notice. Joe Flacco has the offense moving and this could be the start of something special.

10. Philadelphia Eagles—the Eagles torched the Giants this week and some would say it was the Giants that looked bad, not the Eagles looking good. Regardless the Eagles are good enough to be in the top and the loss to the Raiders is now behind them.
