NFL Divisional Playoff Picks:

Arizona @ New Orleans

The second week of the playoffs looks as though it can be as exciting as the Wild card weekend with potential for upsets and some high scoring games. The game most likely to be high scoring is the game between the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints.

The Cardinals played the best game of the week for week one as they hosted a wild game against the Packers. They built a solid lead in the first half but could not hold onto it and the game eventually wound up in overtime. Ironically in a game with no defense it was defense that won the game and the Cardinals are rewarded with a trip to the Big Easy to take on the number one seed, New Orleans Saints.

The Saints had the best year the franchise has ever had. The have a high flying offense and a defense full of ball hawkers, but it was how they ended the season that is fresh in the minds of players and fans alike. They stumbled down the stretch losing three straight to include losing two at home to Dallas and the awful Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The bye week for the Saints should have been put to good use if they want to beat the Cardinals on Saturday.

The Saints were glad to have some time off and this allowed them to heal. They will have a full defense (minus Grant who is out for the season) and will get TE Jeremy Shockey back for this game. The atmosphere for this game will be nuts and will mirror the atmosphere that is found at a college game. The noise will play a role in this game and should affect the Cardinals offense. If the Arizona defense was torched by the Packers offense the Saints will eat them up. New Orleans has covered 10 of 13 as favorites of between 3 ½ and 10 points and the Cardinals have come up short in 11 of 15 ATS on field turf. The return of players for the Saints and the home field advantage will be the difference in this game. The Saints cover the number and move on to the next round.

Play: Saints -7

Baltimore @ Indianapolis

The Ravens have shown that they can beat one All Pro quarterback as they sacked and punished Tom Brady in week one of the playoffs. Now they set their sights on doing it again when the travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts.

The Ravens trounced the Patriots by jumping on them early and putting up 24 points in the first quarter. Ray Rice led the way on the ground and the Ravens as a team rushed for over 200 yards and seemed to move the ball at will on the ground. The defense led by Ray Lewis stifled the Pats vaunted defense and grabbed turnovers with every opportunity. This week they will attempt to repeat the effort against the Colts.

The Colts are under a lot of pressure to win this first game as they let a perfect season go by the wayside by benching their players in the last two weeks of the season. The theory was that the Colts were making sure that they entered the playoffs with a healthy team and would parlay that into a superbowl victory. It is time to put up or shut up and they will have to beat the Ravens to do that.

The Ravens may have the secret to beating the Colts and that is by keeping #18 off the field. Ray Rice is making his name as the elite back in the league and the Ravens are opening huge holes for him at the line. In the first meeting the Ravens lost by just two points so they have the ability to keep this one close. Baltimore has thrived as playoff pups on the road, cashing seven of nine. The Ravens are 10-2 ATS after rushing for more than 150 yards. Home teams in the divisional round have also struggled the last three years at 5-7 SU and 2-10 ATS. If Peyton Manning pulls this game out it will be in the final seconds and they will not cover this number. Take the Ravens and the points and look for the upset.

Play: Ravens +6.5

Dallas @ Minnesota

The Brett Favre story continues this week when the Vikings host the Cowboys in the first playoff game since #4 suited up. Coming into this game it is another quarterback that is getting all the attention.

Tony Romo and the Cowboys are making some noise as one of the hottest playoff teams. They beat the Saints in the New Orleans and then kept winning beating Washington and escorting the Eagles out of the playoffs with two straight wins. They are using a combination of solid offense and steady defense to get the job done.

The Vikings have had a great first year with Brett Favre at the helm. The running of Peterson and the tough Viking defense has led them to a division title and now they will attempt to move on in the playoffs. Down the stretch this team stumbled and seemed to lose big game after big game and all of them seemed to be televised. They had to deal with controversy between Brett Favre and Brad Childress and now will have to focus if they want to beat Dallas.

The Cowboys are the hottest team in the NFC right now and when it comes to the playoffs it is never a smart idea to go against the hot team. They are playing solid defense and will be able to force pressure on Favre and that will lead to turnovers. The Cowboys offense has a mix of speed and power at running back and that opens up the passing game for Tony Romo. Brett Favre has lost seven of his last 10 playoff games and always throws at least one interception trying to win the big one. The Cowboys have covered 11 of 12 after allowing more than 250 yards passing. The Vikings have dropped four straight as favorites of up to three points and they lose this one as the Cowboys upset the Vikings and advance to the next level.

Play: Dallas +3

NY Jets @ San Diego

Just before the post season started Rex Ryan announced that his Jets team should be favored to win the Superbowl. To back up that statement the Jets are going to have to win at San Diego.

The Jets won the first game of the journey by taking down the Bengals in Cincinnati. They won with a good balance of rushing the ball and playing some hard hitting defense. Mark Sanchez performed very well as a rookie quarterback in his first game and if they can duplicate that effort they will move on to the next round of the playoffs.

The Chargers were arguably the best team in the NFL down the stretch as they won eleven games in a row as they walked away with the AFC West and the #2 seed. This Chargers team is seeing the window close on their chance at a title and knows that they will have to put together a well rounded effort if they want to beat the New York Jets.

This line opened up as high as nine in some places and was quickly bet down to 7.5 as Jets backers started crawling out of the woodwork. The Chargers are in a great spot here because they are at home and they are rested. For as good as the Jets defense looked they did give up 169 yards rushing to Cedric Benson and that means the Chargers will be able to run the ball. This will open up passing lanes for Phillip Rivers and even though Darrelle Revis is the best cornerback in the league he can’t cover everyone on the Chargers team. San Diego has grabbed the green at a 6-2-1 clip in its last nine games and it is 21-7 as home favorites of 3 ½ to 10 points. The Chargers have also passed four of their last five playoff tests ATS. The Jets are 3-10 ATS off back to back wins by 10 or more and should flounder on the west coast. The Bolts are 19-8 ATS off an over and 17-5 ATS off back to back straight up wins. The Chargers will dominate the Jets from start to finish and this will be the most lopsided game of the week.

Play: Chargers -7.5
