Uptowncharlybrown is a horse that had high expectations for his career that have just never truly panned out. He has been at least one of the top few favorites in all five races that he has won in his career, but since upgrading to stakes races as a three year old and running at longer distances, things just haven't worked for him.
Uptowncharlybrown is traditionally a slower starting horse, which shouldn't be a huge problem running in the 1 1/2 mile marathon known as the Belmont Stakes. He has a tendency of coming from the rear of the pack with a huge kick at the ends of races, and save at the Tampa Bay Derby in March, he has shown the ability to close several lengths in the final two furlongs. The question remains whether or not that kick can carry him to the winner's circle in Elmont Park.
Jockey Rajiv Maragh will get his chance to ride this colt for the first time in his career. Just like several of the other horses in the field, Uptowncharlybrown will have a his third different jockey on his back in as many races since turning three years old.
The time off for this horse may pay dividends, as he hasn't run since the middle of April at the Lexington, whereas several of these colts have at least run one, if not two races since that point.
If you plan on backing Uptowncharlybrown at the mutuels, don't be surprised to see him drop backwards to avoid traffic early on. If Maragh plays his cards right, this horse should start to make his move right around the 1 mile mark. If he has the kick in him, Uptowncharlybrown could win this race and vastly improve upon his $99,200 in career earnings. If that kick can't carry him the last half mile though, he could fall back through the field just as quickly as he came up through it.
