"My horse will win the Triple Crown." -Jockey Calvin Borel

If you don't believe that Super Saver has a great chance of winning the whole enchilada, just look at his combination of trainer and jockey. Todd Pletcher may not have had a Derby title under his belt prior to two Saturdays ago, but many accept him as one of the top trainers in the business. Jockey Calvin Borel, who most likely had his pick of most of the horses in this field, has now won three of the L/4 Kentucky Derbies, including last year with 50/1 longshot Mine That Bird.

The most impressive run that Super Saver has ever prior to his Kentucky Derby came at the Kentucky Jockey Club in 2009. He bested a field that ended up not being all that special with only a handful of legitimate Kentucky Derby contenders, and he did so by a whopping five lengths. Borel was on board that day, just as he was in April for the Arkansas Derby, a race that Super Saver was just narrowly beaten out in by Line Of David.

In theory, this was a horse that was bred for speed. However, Borel did a nice job of holding him back on the rail and managed to successfully guide him towards the finish line first with plenty of kick left in him. On his dam's side of his pedigree, champion horses A.P. Indy and Seattle Slew give Super Saver a ton of stamina to match that speed. Sire Maria's Mon isn't anything to really write home about, though.

A run at the Tampa Bay Derby at just 1 1/16 miles is still the only race that might scare some horse bettors. Super Saver fought tooth and nail the entire way in that race, only to ultimately run out of gas in the dying furlong against a field of very suspect three year olds. Super Saver will go off as a hefty favorite at the Preakness Stakes and could be odds on depending on how strong the rest of the field is that enters around him.
