Trainer Rick Dutrow is going to take yet another effort at fielding a Triple Crown winner, as he will send Spangled Star into the Belmont Stakes field. However, this is his most questionable entry into any of the three most important races in the sport.
Spangled Star took six races to finally break his maiden, and since then, he really hasn't done much to write home about either. He was only entered into one graded stakes race in preparation for the Triple Crown, and that came in the form of a third place finish at the G3 Withers at Aqueduct against a very weak field of three year olds.
It's going to take a speed rating of significantly higher than 87 to win the Belmont Stakes, and Spangled Star has never done anything of the sorts. That 87 did come in the Withers, his most recent, but that smashed his previous career best by 15 on the Beyer rankings.
Even though this is a horse that initially ran on turf, there is just no reason to believe that he can make it the full mile and a half in this race. Spangled Star has historically faltered down the stretch at 1 1/16 miles in basic stakes races, and now he has to go up against a group of three year olds that is at least capable of being called Triple Crown contenders.
This shouldn't be a horse that comes anywhere near your Belmont Stakes betting ticket, and it would be quite the shock if he was even able to best half the horses in this field.
