Aikenite probably isn't a horse that many are going to think of for his abilities to win these huge races, but he may be a very sneaky play at the mutuels on Saturday afternoon at Pimlico. A closer by nature, Aikenite is going to get the best of both worlds as the rail horse, as he is going to be able to get the quick jump around the first turn and shouldn't drift back into too much traffic along the rail prior to his big move at the end of the race.
Jockey Javier Castellano is going to get the mount aboard this colt, which is trained by Todd Pletcher (who also trains Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver). Castellano has only ridden once at Pimlico before, and he is one for one, bringing Bernardini to the winner's circle in the race that is significantly more noted for Barbaro breaking down on the track.

Aikenite does have a ton of preparation work in him for the Triple Crown races, and he has held his own at times against some major fields. He has run right there with the lines of Lookin At Lucky, Noble's Promise, Stately Victor, and even Eskendereya. However, he still only has that one maiden victory under his belt at Saratoga and has largely underachieved since then.

Breeding is going to be an issue here as well. Even though Silverlado has a great pedigree from Aikenite's dam's sire, Yes It's True doesn't provide the shocking speed or stamina of some of these other three year olds.

Still, Aikenite's experience may prove to come in handy, especially if Castellano can get him a solid ride on Saturday at Pimlico. Don't be shocked to see the #1 horse nip a lot of contenders right at the wire with a big move in the final furlong.
