The Bulls had an up and down season that ended with a seventh round playoff ticket. Unlike most teams the Bulls came out fighting. They played a very tough and entertaining playoff series against the Boston Celtics and almost pulled off the upset. That level of play should be something to get the team and its fans excited for the upcoming season but they will have to survive many of the off-season changes.
It will be up to Vinny Del Negro to try to keep his Bulls headed in the right direction. In his first year he made great strides under speculation and now he wants to prove it was not a fluke. Del Negro did not know that this year he would lose one of his best players in the off-season.
In the playoffs against the Celtics it was Ben Gordon that stood head and shoulders above the other players with his streaky shooting to stand out as a superstar. He parlayed that into a fat payday with the Detroit Pistons. Expecting the Bulls to improve with his departure is asking too much, but they still have young talent and grabbed more in the draft.
In the draft the Bulls stuck with forwards gobbling up Taj Gibson and James Johnson. The Bulls draft received high grades but don’t look for immediate impact. The Bulls really need healthy players and the continued growth of the current potential all-stars. Then the younger talent they acquired in the draft can learn the game instead of being rushed into the game. The future is bright for the Bulls but they have questions that need to be answered.
Can Luol Deng come back from a broken leg and stay healthy all year? He will need to if he wants to help fill the hole that Ben Gordon leaves behind. Joakim Noah showed that he will be an outstanding player in this league and even Brad Miller looked rejuvenated playing for this team. Derrick Rose will be the leader on the court and he matured in the playoffs. The playoffs are a definite for this team but the seeding could verify from the eighth spot to as high as the fourth spot. One thing for sure is they will be fun to watch this season and could advance deep in the post season.
