Game Overview

The Giants are coming off back-to-back 9-7 records with vastly different results. In 2011 they won the NFC East and got hot at the right time to win the Super Bowl. Last season nine wins was a case of too little, too late and they missed the playoffs altogether. New York comes into this season as a slight favorite to edge out Dallas for the division title, but that could very well hinge on a win in this game.

Based on what I saw from Eli Manning and the Giants’ offense in limited action in the preseason, this unit will bring some major rust into this season opener. Manning has always been streaky in nature and he could easily struggle to put some points on the board if the offense cannot establish an effective running game against a Dallas defense that was ranked 22nd in the NFL last season against the run. New York also comes into this season opener with some major question marks on the defensive side of the ball after finishing last season ranked 31st in the NFL.

Cowboys’ owner and self-appointed general manager Jerry Jones has dialed-up the pressure on his team to an all new level which could work to drive it deep into the playoffs this season or drive it straight into the ground. Dallas has missed the postseason the last three years due to late-season collapses, but a loss on Sunday night could easily send this team on a downward spiral right out of the gate.

At the center of the storm is 11-year veteran Tony Romo. He was rewarded with a huge contract extension this past offseason that came with plenty of strings attached. He threw for close to 5000 yards in 2012 with 28 touchdowns, but he also turned the ball over 25 times with 19 interceptions and 6 fumbles. This is a make or break season that kicks things off with a make or break game, so it will be very interesting to see how he reacts to the pressure.

The Giants are 6-2 straight-up in the last eight meetings and they have won five of the last six meetings in Big D, but under the prime time lights of Sunday Night Football look for the Cowboys to reverse their current fortunes in this matchup with a convincing win. New York is still a few weeks away from hitting its championship form and Dallas finds a way to take full advantage of the situation.
