World Series Pick: Texas Rangers @ St. Louis Cardinals Game 1
- Updated: October 18, 2011
Texas has been watching and waiting for a number of days for this series to get started, and it has to feel like it has a great chance of getting back to Arlington with a chance to win this series in five game if it can take one out of two at Busch Stadium. What Manager Ron Washington can’t be all that happy with right now is the fact that his Game 1 pitcher, CJ Wilson, just hasn’t pitched spectacular baseball in these playoffs. Wilson really only had one good game in the playoffs last year, as he allowed just two hits in 6.1 scoreless innings against the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, and this year, he hasn’t had a single good start. The free agent to be is 0-2 with an ERA over 8.00 for the playoffs, and he has failed to pitch into the seventh inning in any of his games thus far. That being said, his bullpen has done a great job of picking him up, as the unit has only allowed a total of two runs in his three games in the playoffs.
The Cardinals are just tearing the cover off of the baseball right now. They were averaging over six runs per game in the NLCS before dropping 15 on the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, a place where they virtually never end up losing in Game 6 to close out the series. David Freese has become a folk hero in St. Louis, and though the Cards fans know that they could lose him to free agency at the end of the year, they’re enjoying every single moment that they have with Albert Pujols right now. Both are batting over .400 for the playoffs, and both are amongst the keys to victory in this series. Chris Carpenter is going to get the baseball in Game 1 of the World Series. He’s really only had one good start out of the three that he has had in these playoffs, but that one was a dynamite game, a 1-0 complete game shutout victory over Roy Halladay in the Philadelphia Phillies on the road in Game 5 of the NLDS. It was the second shutout that Carpenter had thrown in the past two weeks, and if he can keep this type of form up here in the World Series, not only will the Cardinals win this game, but the series as well.
Texas Rangers @ St. Louis Cardinals Pick: It’s utterly ridiculous that because of the All Star Game victory for the National League that the Cards get to host this game, but alas, that’s where we’re at. St. Louis is hot right now, and we aren’t going to go against Carpenter, especially in the form that Wilson is in, and especially at a very generous -125 price.
MLB Pick: St. Louis Cardinals -125 at Bookmaker Sportsbook.
