Slovenia might be in first place in this group with four points, but it can’t feel as though its position is solid. The Slovenians are the decided underdogs in this match, and a loss will most likely eliminate them from this competition. A real opportunity was missed on Friday against the United States, as Slovenia took a 2-0 lead at halftime and looked like a dominant side. Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic both scored in that first half, which was owned by Slovenia. Things started to fall apart right at the outset of the second half though, as the US clawed its way back into the match and nearly stole all three points from the contest. In fact, if not for a very controversial call on the Stars and Stripes in the penalty area, Slovenia may just have three points instead of four and would probably need a win instead of a draw in this match in order to get through. Still, the World Cup rookies have represented themselves well and should be considered a real threat to take something out of this fixture.

As for the Brits, something is clearly wrong right now and had better change, or the 2010 World Cup will end abruptly. Only a win is going to do for jolly England, as a draw would probably see the United States through instead of the Three Lions, unless the USA plays to a scoreless draw and England has at least a 2-2 draw. However, the team hasn’t scored a goal in this tournament since the fourth minute of the opening match, a very bad sign for a team that was supposed to be one of the most dynamic in the world. F Wayne Rooney has really been nowhere in sight after scoring nine goals in qualifying in as many matches. The real controversy has come in net though, as Robert Green, the goat from the 1-1 draw against the United States, was replaced by David James. James did keep a clean sheet against Algeria, but it wasn’t an effort that really required all that much to pull off.

There is something wrong with England right now, and we are going to take advantage of it. Slovenia is playing out of its mind, and odds have it, the relatively neutral viewers in South Africa are going to be rallying around the underdogs. We can’t see England winning this match by more than one goal, and though we think that that may be the most likely scenario, we aren’t discounting the Slovenians’ ability to steal a point and a berth into the second round.
