Week 2 College Football Playoff Rankings: Undefeated Teams Fighting For Respect

Last Updated: 2017-11-07

college football playoffOnce again, the SEC has the top two teams in the second installment of the College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings. The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs remained on top, while the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide stayed a step behind. Just like last week, the two teams are on a collision course to meet in the SEC Championship game. However, they both still have to go against a newly minted No. 10 Auburn Tigers. First, the Bulldogs take on the Tigers this Saturday. Then, the Crimson Tide face the Tigers in the yearly Iron Bowl.

The selection committee had no reason to alter the rest of the top four. With the No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish and No. 4 Clemson Tigers winning their respective games, the playoff race remained the same. However, the Fighting Irish have a tough Top 10 matchup against the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes.

The Big 12’s best teams also face off this weekend. When No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners face the No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday, the winner will be setup for a nice run into the College Football Playoff rankings. Since both programs are ranked ahead of two undefeated teams, the Big 12 is sitting pretty. Still, there’s no guarantee that these one-loss programs will rise into the top four. More importantly, there is a great chance that the Sooners and Horned Frogs will battle each other twice for the Big 12 title. Meaning, a split could cause the Big 12 to lose out on a potential College Football Playoff berth.

Currently, the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers are the highest ranked Big Ten team. Although they remain undefeated, their schedule leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks to a couple of upsets, the Badgers moved up, however, those losses may have damage their chances to cement a playoff berth. Keep in mind, the Big Ten has six ranked teams in the College Football Playoff Top 25. The Badgers already defeated the No. 25 Northwestern Wildcats. They face No. 20 Iowa Hawkeyes a week after one of the biggest shockers of the season. The No. 12 Michigan State Spartans rose 12 spots after defeating the No. 14 Penn State Nittany Lions. The Spartans come right back to face the No. 13 Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday.

The PAC-12 only has one team with a single loss. That means the No. 9 Washington Huskies have the best chance to sneak into the College Football Playoff. They earned a spot last season, but a bad performance in a loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils may be their undoing. Interestingly enough, the No. 11 USC Trojans are also right back in the mix. They are the second highest rated two-loss team in college football. Can we imagine a scenario where a two-loss PAC-12 champion gets into the top four? Well, that would probably entail the Trojans defeating the Huskies in the PAC-12 Championship.

There are only two Group of 5 teams in the rankings. They both come from the AAC. The No. 18 UCF Golden Knights are the leader, while the No. 22 Memphis Tigers have been coming on strong. Both teams have a path to meet each other in the conference championship game. However, the undefeated Golden Knights aren’t getting the respect they rightfully deserve.

Here is the College Football Top 25 Playoff Rankings.
