The Arena Football League regular season is quickly winding down, although not too many people really care. There are two weeks of the regular season remaining before the playoffs start, and the Philadelphia Soul are prohibitive favorites to walk away with the Arena Bowl. Philadelphia is -400 to win it all and the field is +280.
Philadelphia at Baltimore: The Soul suffered their only loss of the season in this same venue three weeks ago, when they were stunned by the Brigade 48-41. They responded with a 68-41 win over Washington and were off last week. Philadelphia does have a game with Tampa Bay next week and the Storm are the biggest threat to Philadelphia in the playoffs, but it’s hard not to imagine that the Soul will be ready for this one and out to avenge its lone loss.
Baltimore has dropped its two games since upsetting Philadelphia and will look to get things turned around here, but it won’t be easy. The Brigade are in the hunt for the playoffs, but are more likely to secure a spot next week when they play Washington.
The line on this one is Philadelphia -9 with a total of 106.5 and my numbers have this one 58-46 in favor of Philadelphia.
Cleveland at Washington: Entering last week, the 1-10 Washington Valor knew they needed to win their last three games to make the playoffs. Those hopes are still alive after a 34-30 defensive struggle victory over Baltimore and the Valor will look to extend those hopes another week when the Cleveland Gladiators pay a visit. Washington is the best defensive team in the league, but also the worst offensively and in the Arena Football League you have to be able to put points on the scoreboard.
Both of Washington’s wins came at home and Cleveland has just one road win this season, although that happened to come against Washington, and the Gladiators have won the first two games between the two this season. Still, a victory by the Valor should set-up a win and get in game against Baltimore next week, which would generate a bit of local interest. Despite sharing close to the same geographical area, the Valor have drawn many more fans per game, something that can’t be overlooked when it comes to the AFL.
Cleveland is favored by 1.5 and the total is 90.5. My numbers make this one Washington 44-43, so will take the small home underdog to keep its playoff hopes alive another week.
