College Football Betting Trends- Week 1 Matchups in the Big Ten
We are rapidly closing-in on Week 1 of the 2013 college football season and to help you get a jump on handicapping the matchups, BetDSI has released it opening lines for all the games on the schedule. This time around, College Betting Trends will take a closer look at some of the key contests involving teams from the Big Ten Conference.
The first team from the Big Ten to open its 2013 campaign will be the Minnesota Golden Gophers hosting the UNLV Rebels from the Mountain West in a 7 p.m. (ET) start on Thursday, Aug. 29. The game will be available on the Big Ten Network. Minnesota stumbled is way to a 2-6 straight-up record in the conference last season and finished 6-7 SU overall. The Rebels went 2-6 SU as well in the MWC and 2-11 SU overall so both teams will be looking for a fresh start. These two teams opened last season against one another with the Golden Gophers squeezing out a 30-27 overtime victory as 8.5-point road favorites. This time around they have been opened as 14.5-point favorite at home.
The Indiana Hoosiers will also open their season a few days early when they play host to the Mountain Valley’s Indiana State Sycamores on Thursday, Aug. 29 in a 7 p.m. start. Indiana is another Big Ten team looking for a fresh start after going 2-6 SU in conference play and 4-8 SU overall. This will be another opening-day rematch after the Hoosiers beat Indiana State 24-17 last year as 14-point favorites at home. The opening line for this year’s game has yet to be set given that the Sycamores are a Division IAA school.
Michigan State will start its 2013 season off against the Western Michigan Broncos from the Mid-American Conference in a Friday, Aug.30 matchup at Spartan Stadium that will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. These two teams are also coming off disappointing records in 2012 with the Spartans going 7-6 SU overall but just 3-5 SU in the Big Ten while the Broncos were 4-8 SU overall. These two last met in 2010 with Michigan State rolling to a 38-14 victory as a 22.5-point home favorite. The Spartans have been opened as 24.5-point home favorites for this contest.
The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Wisconsin Badgers will open their season Saturday, Aug. 31 as heavy favorites against a pair of teams from the MAC in a 12 p.m. start. The Buckeyes have been opened as 34-point home favorites against the Buffalo Bulls while the Badgers will play host to the Massachusetts Minutemen as 44-point favorites. Another Big Ten/MAC matchup scheduled for later in the day on Saturday pits Michigan against Central Michigan as a 28-point home favorite.
One of the more entertaining Big Ten games on the schedule for Week 1 should be Penn State on the road against Syracuse in a renewal of an old Big East rivalry. Despite suffering through some of the harshest sanctions in NCAA football history, the Lions still managed to turn in a winning record last season at 8-4 SU overall and 6-2 SU in the conference. They come into this matchup as five-point favorites against the Orange, who are starting their first season in the ACC. The last time these two teams met was in 2009 with Penn State rolling to a 28-7 victory, but failing to cover as a 28.5-point home favorite. This contest is scheduled for a 3:30 start at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey and the game will be broadcast nationally on ABC.
The final game on Saturday’s slate with a 10:30 p.m. scheduled start is a Big Ten/Pac-12 clash between the Northwestern Wildcats and the California Golden Bears. Expectations are running high for Northwestern this season after posting a 10-3 SU record in 2012. It has been opened as an 8.5-point road favorite over a Golden Bears’ team that went 3-9 SU last year.
