Wake Forest and Boston College both got a season-opening win over a non-FBS school, but they’ll square off in their first ACC game of the year on Friday night. These two schools don’t usually get a lot of attention, but ESPN2 will nationally televise this game on Friday. Let’s take a closer look at this matchup.
Wake Forest is a tough program to compete at in the ACC. The school has an overall enrollment of just 4,476 students, which is far smaller than everyone else in the conference. In fact, they are the smallest BCS conference team in the nation. Despite that major challenge, Jim Grobe has made the team competitive over the last few years. They went 5-7 last year, but they return 15 starters from last year’s team, and they are expecting a bowl berth in 2013. Left-hander Tanner Price knows the offensive system well, and he does a good job managing the offense. Joshua Harris gives the Demon Deacons one of the best running backs they have had in quite some time, and the team is likely to run the ball quite a bit this year.
The Demon Deacons will need their defense to be better this year. Wake Forest allowed 31.8 points per game last year, and that will have to get much better in 2013 if they are going to be competitive in the ACC. The secondary looked awesome against Presbyterian in week one, only allowing 49 yards through the air, but Demon Deacons fans should wait and see how they fare against an FBS offense before getting too excited.
Boston College returns a ton of players from last year. They return 18 starters overall, and only 15 lettermen from last year are gone. Steve Addazio was hired as the new coach here. Addazio did a nice job at Temple, and he brings a lot of enthusiasm to the program. Running back Andre Williams is the centerpiece of this Eagles offense. Williams is an extremely powerful runner, who the new coaching staff is very high on. Look for him to get a lot more opportunities than he did last year. Chase Rettig is a solid senior quarterback for the Eagles. One concern is Rettig learning yet another new offense. The Eagles are now on their fifth offensive coordinator in the past three years.
The Boston College defense took a huge step backward last year, and that was the primary reason this team went 2-10 on the year. The Eagles return ten starters on this side of the ball, so they should certainly be much improved as compared to 2012. The defensive front needs to get some more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. This will be a good test for the Eagles defense.
Free Pick: Wake Forest +3
Wake Forest beat Boston College 28-14 at home last year. This game is played at Boston College, but I’m not convinced that the Eagles are in great shape for this season despite return a lot of starters from last year. I’ll take the points in a game that should be close to the end.
