NCAA Football – Week 6

The BYU Cougars and the Utah State Aggies fight it out on Friday night in the second game of a college football betting doubleheader on ESPN, as these two clash for Beehive State supremacy.

You have to go back to 1974 to find the last time that the Aggies were able to beat both the Cougars and the Utah Utes in the same season. There has been a heck of a lot of frustration in the interim, but now is the opportunity for Utah State to shine. Not only would a win end that streak, but it also might put the Aggies into the Top 25 for the first time since 1961. It hasn’t come without a heck of a fight most years, as USU has covered four in a row in this series, including beating the Cougars in 2010. The argument could be made that the Aggies have the better team this year, knowing that QB Chuckie Keeton is one of the best players in the entire state. Keeton has 1,281 passing yards and 218 more on the ground, and he has a total of 11 TDs against just four picks on the campaign. We also have to remember that this young man is only a sophomore, so a win in this game could go a long way towards helping out the future of the Utah State football program as well.

The Cougars are coming off of a big time 47-0 romp of the Hawaii Warriors last Friday night, marking their second straight cover. In fact, this is their third consecutive game on national television. They nearly beat the Boise State Broncos on the Smurf Turf two Thursdays ago. and then disposed of Hawaii the following Friday. QB Riley Nelson could be back in the fold this week for the Cougs, but then again, he might not be getting all of the snaps either. His injured back has given a chance for QB Taysom Hill to play. Hill has answered the bell with 190 passing yards and three scores, and he also has 256 yards and four TDs on the ground. If Nelson plays, expect to see both quarterbacks when push comes to shove. BYU’s defense has been remarkable this year, allowing just a total of 50 points on the campaign.

As much as we really like Utah State, we just think that the team is a year away. Had RB Robert Turbin come back for his senior season, this might have been a different story. All good things have to come to an end, and that means that the Aggies’ 4-0-1 ATS mark since the start of the season has to go, too. The Cougars are perhaps two or three plays from being 5-0, ranked in the Top 15 in the land, and being 17-point favorites in this game. Nothing has changed. Go with the Cougs. BYU 34 – Utah State 23
