The “Holy War” is one of the grittiest battles on the gridiron every single season, and the Utah Utes and the BYU Cougars are going to be having at it in this one. Join us as we try to beat the college football betting lines in this clash of the titans in the Beehive State.
Utah isn’t off to a bad start to its season by any stretch of the imagination. The Utes have a pair of wins, including already beating the Utah State Aggies, meaning that they can claim the Beehive Cup with a victory in this one. Last week’s loss to the Oregon State Beavers was a tough one, as the 51-48 loss in overtime will sting for quite some time. QB Travis Wilson is doing a really nice job of stretching the field. He is averaging 10.6 yards per pass attempt and has seven TDs against three picks on the season. WR Dres Anderson and WR Sean Fitzgerald are both averaging darn near 20 yards per catch, and if this keeps up, this is going to be one of the toughest offenses to try to stop in the country. Oh, by the way, Wilson is also the team’s leading rusher with 244 yards and five TDs on just 24 carries. Of course, the Utah defense is another story entirely. The team is allowing 297.7 passing yards per game, ranking just 114th in the land.
BYU is typically known as a passing team, but this year, it’s been all about the run. QB Taysom Hill isn’t the strongest passer in the world, but he does have a good enough arm to keep defenses honest at times. He’s only 22-of-66 passing for the season with 304 yards and a score, but he also has 301 yards and four TDs on the ground. Keep an eye on RB Jamaal Williams, who has 326 yards as well to show for his work. The question is whether the Cougars are going to be able to stretch the field in this game. Though Hill is only averaging 4.6 yards per pass attempt, he is averaging 13.8 yards per completion. That’s a recipe for real success when you’re defending a bit of the run option look, and the Cougs are doing that quite well thus far on the season. We haven’t seen much out of the defense that really gets us excited, though. Sure, beating the Texas Longhorns was great, but the competition between the Horns and the Virginia Cavaliers just hasn’t been all that elite.
Considering the fact that there is only one Top 25 game all day long, this really could be one of the best games of the day. We think that Utah getting points in this one is a good idea, knowing that it is 7-2 ATS in the last nine games in this series. Three of the last four games have been decided by three points or fewer and six of the last eight have been decided by seven points or fewer.
