The Oregon State Beavers are still in contention in the Pac-12 North this year, and they are going to be squaring off in what might be a Pac-12 Championship Game eliminator against the USC Trojans on Friday night on ESPN2.
If you can figure out which USC team is going to show up on a nightly basis, please let us know how you did it. This team has put up 38, 41, 35, and 30 in four of its games this year and 19, 10, 17, and 7 in its other four games. What’s funny is that the defense is the exact same way. The Trojans have allowed 3, 14, 14, 7, 10, and 13 in six games and 31 and 62 in the other two. New coach? Same problems. Head Coach Ed Orgeron has coached the team to two games where he guided the team to aggregate final scores of 29-17, and in the first game that he had, the Trojans beat the Arizona Wildcats 38-31. The excuses are officially out for the Men of Troy, though. They have named their quarterback in QB Cody Kessler, they have back RB Silas Redd, they’re still using RB Tre Madden well, and WR Nelson Agholor is putting up numbers that look a lot like those of WR Marqise Lee from last season. With offensive names like that, this should be a team that is scoring a ton more than it is.
We have a tough time believing that the Beavers aren’t going to score some points in this game, but then again, we had a tough time believing that they would be held to just 12 points against the Stanford Cardinal last week. QB Sean Mannion is one of the best signal callers in the land, and even though he was shut down by Stanford, he still is leading the top passing attack in the country at 420.8 yards per game. USC has gone up against one similar offense this year, and though it held the Washington State Beavers down to just 10 points, it ultimately was beaten in the game at home. If this one starts to get out of hand, it could be a long night for the Trojans defensively. The teams that have had success against Oregon State’s defense have done so thanks to the passing game. That’s why Southern Cal could be in some trouble in this one, as this clearly isn’t playing to its strengths this year.
The oddsmakers got this one wrong at the start of the week, and they are already paying for it. They really should have lined Oregon State around -7 or so, and until or unless the line gets that high, we’re going to pounce. There’s a reason that all of the action is on the Beavs in this one, and we think that it is absolutely justified.
