Lewis Hamilton will try and wrap up the Formula One driver’s championship on Sunday at the United States Grand Prix on NBC. Hamilton has surged recently to fly past Sebastian Vettel in the standings, as he is now 59 points ahead. Hamilton could wrap things up with a win on Sunday if Vettel finishes sixth or worse. Hamilton is listed as the odds-on favorite to win Sunday’s race, while Vettel is the second choice at +240. Let’s look at the race and F1 picks.
The United States Grand Prix takes place on Sunday, October 22 in Austin, Texas, with a start time of noon Eastern on NBC.
Odds to Win United States Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton -120
Sebastian Vettel +240
Valtteri Bottas +675
Kimi Raikkonen +1425
Max Verstappen +1475
Daniel Ricciardo +1650
Maybe this category should just be termed top contender, as Hamilton is dominating Formula One right now. He has won five of the last seven races overall and he has won this race in each of the last three years. Mercedes has won 10 of the 16 races this season with Hamilton winning eight times, while Bottas has won twice. Vettel has won four times, while Ricciardo and Verstappen have one win each. We know that starting up front is critical in Formula One and Mercedes has won the pole in 68 of the last 74 races. Hamilton has won 10 poles this season.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said that Hamilton is driving better than ever and that the team has taken advantage of Ferrari’s recent struggles. Wolff also said that Bottas has been struggling lately.
This will be the sixth time that Austin will be hosting the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton and Vettel are the only current drivers to have won this race, with Hamilton winning four times, while Vettel has one win. Hamilton could clinch the F1 title on Sunday, but he needs to score 16 more points than Vettel to do it. That would mean he needs to win this race and have Vettel finish sixth or worse. Just four races remain in the 2017 season.
With Formula One this season it has come down to choosing either Mercedes or Ferrari to win on a weekly basis and that has normally been picking either Hamilton or Vettel. There is no real reason to think that changes this week in the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton has dominated this race, winning five times, while Vettel has the other win. None of the other drivers really have a shot unless Hamilton or Vettel crash or have mechanical failure. It would be easy to pick Hamilton in this race but I think Vettel may have one more run in him this season and there is no question that Vettel has more value in terms of odds at +240, so I will make him my top choice in this race.
