NBA Betting: Thunder at Lakers
- Updated: March 9, 2014
Most people who follow NBA betting might be of the opinion that the Oklahoma City Thunder should be able to just walk out onto the court and roll over the Los Angeles Lakers. Maybe that’s the case; maybe it isn’t. But after suffering a defeat, you had better believe that the Thunder finds itself in no mood to show mercy to a beaten and battered Laker squad in NBA betting action that begins at 3:30 PM Eastern time on Sunday afternoon at the Staples Center.
And if having the home-court advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs is something very critical to the Thunder, then they must feel like they are in a desperate situation right now, because their 46-16 straight-up record is only a half-game ahead of the San Antonio Spurs. Oklahoma City is a team that has been profitable for the folks who have supported them against the basketball lines, with a record of 34-28. The Lakers are in last place in the West all by themselves now, with a record of 21-42 straight up. They remain a pretty good team against the point spread however, posting a 33-28-2 mark.
This will be the third meeting between these teams this season. The last time they played at the Staples Center, the Lakers gave the West leaders all they could handle before going down to a 107-103 defeat.

You simply can’t talk about the Lakers these days without making mention of their recent humiliation at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers, who decided to beat their red-headed step child half to death.
In that Thursday night game, the Clippers made 57 field goals, and possessed a whopping 71-41 advantage on the boards, while forcing 22 Laker turnovers. Of course, it was even worse than it sounded. The Clippers had a 44-13 edge in the second quarter, and that it was pretty easy from there. If the Lakers hadn’t outscored their intra-city rivals in the fourth period, it may have been a beatdown for the ages. As it was, the beatdown was more than impressive, ending mercifully for the Lakers with the final buzzer and a 142-94 defeat, where they basically bricked as an eleven-point dog in the NBA betting odds, with “dog” the operative word. .
Was that effort a wake-up call for the defense? Well, as the guy in the Hertz commercial says, “not exactly.” On Friday night the Denver Nuggets rolled to a 134-126 victory over the Lakers, and this means that over the last three games, the Lakers have allowed 136 points per game on 56% shooting.
This is an always a formula for disaster against the number; in fact, Los Angeles actually covered the game they played at the Pepsi Center in Denver. If you’re looking for in NBA betting trend to hang onto, take notice that seven of the last eight games the Lakers have played have gone over the total as it has been posted at VietBet
It may come as no surprise for sportsbook bettors who follow the league to know that the Thunder have played five of their six games over the total. So what does this mean? Well, it means that Oklahoma City does not mind stepping up the pace at all. So, keep in mind that it is not likely they will play any “slow down” tactics, since they know that even though Mike D’Antoni would love to run the same kind of offense he ran in Phoenix, he just doesn’t have the personnel to make it happen. Kobe Bryant continues to be sidelined with a knee injury, and there is no telling if he’ll be back at all.
Thankfully the Lakers have had the opportunity to get at least some injured players back, although Nick Young is going to be missing this game, according to reports. But a roster that is much closer to full strength than it was, say, four weeks ago, allows D’Antoni the option of running the ball a lot more. That has happened here, but it may well backfire on them, against Oklahoma City squad that has scored 121 points a game and shot 52% from the floor over this last three-game stretch.
