Pointspread: Oklahoma -7
Total Line: OFF
Texas Tech started the season in the shadows of all the contenders for the Big 12 crown, but eight weeks into the schedule it is a perfect 7-0 straight-up on the year and a profitable 5-2 against the spread. It is coming off a 37-27 victory over West Virginia this past Saturday as a 4.5-point road favorite with the total going OVER the 58-point closing line. The total has now gone OVER in five of its first seven games.
One of the keys to the Red Raiders’ success this season has been a passing game that is averaging 416.4 yards a game, which is the second-highest total in the nation. The combination of Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb has thrown for 2,915 yards and 19 touchdowns. Webb had the hot hand against West Virginia with 462 yards and two scores in relief of Webb, who has missed the last two games with an injured knee. He remains questionable for Saturday’s game.
The Sooners are off to a 6-1 SU start with their only setback being a 36-20 loss to Texas two weeks ago as 13.5-point road favorites. They bounced back with a 34-19 victory against Kansas this past Saturday, but could not cover as 21-point favorites on the road. Oklahoma is 3-4 ATS this season and the total has gone OVER in three of its last five games.
This offense continues to grind-out the majority of its yards on the ground with a running game that is averaging 227.9 yards a contest. Brennan Clay has done most of the damage with 496 yards on 79 attempts for an average of 6.3 yards a carry. The real strength of this team still lies in a defense that is holding teams to 17.1 points a game, which is ranked ninth in the nation.
Free College Football Pick
This is a classic matchup between a high-powered passing game and a defense that prides itself on shutting its opponents down. It will be a test of wills to see which sides succeeds on Saturday, but the free pick is with Texas Tech. These two conference rivals have evenly split the last eight meetings with a different SU winner each year. The Sooners have a good shot at breaking that pattern with another SU win this season, but take the Red Raiders to still cover with the seven points.
Oklahoma 28 Texas Tech 27
