NFL Betting Favorite: Chiefs -6.5
Before the season, the Houston Texans were considered a real Super Bowl contender. The Kansas City Chiefs were thought to be better than last year’s 2-14 disaster, but no one expected the team to be 6-0 coming into this game. Now, the Texans are in shambles and the Chiefs are one of the remaining unbeatens. Houston looked like they had given up last week. Can they put things back together, or will the Chiefs go to 7-0?
Matt Schaub was public enemy number one in Houston after his recent struggles, and fans even cheered his injury last week (pathetic). Schaub may miss this game, which would mean T.J. Yates would be under center for the Texans. Yates has 0 touchdowns and 2 picks in limited action this season. The one positive for the Texans from last week’s disaster against the Rams was the improved play of Arian Foster. He ran for 141 yards on just 20 carries, and it looks like he is finally healthy again. Houston should ride him as far as he will take him in the next couple weeks. Houston is seventh in the league in yards per game, but they are averaging only 17.7 points per game. Turnovers have haunted this team all year.
The Texans defense is ranked number one in the league against the pass. The Texans run defense has been surprisingly bad. On paper, the front seven is very good, but they are allowing opponents to run for 121.5 yards per game so far this season. It hasn’t helped that this defense has been put in a lot of bad situations and they are constantly having to defend a short field.
Kansas City went 2-14 last year, but they are 6-0 this season. Talk about an amazing turnaround! The Chiefs hired Andy Reid in the offseason, and he is now the most popular guy in town. Alex Smith has done exactly what the team has asked him to do at the quarterback position as well. Smith manages the team well and does a good job protecting the football. The Chiefs have been winning the turnover battle on a consistent basis, and that is a big reason they are still without a loss on the season. Jamaal Charles has 475 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns.
The Chiefs defense is the primary reason they are unbeaten. Kansas City has stars all over the field on defense. Eric Berry has become one of the best safeties in the league. Tamba Hali and Justin Houston are a terrific tandem when it comes to getting pressure on the opposing quarterback. Derrick Johnson leads the team with 39 tackles from his linebacker position. The Chiefs are allowing only 10.8 points per game so far this year, which is first in the NFL. This unit has been able to stay healthy so far this season, and as long as they stay healthy they should be one of the best stop units in the league.
Free Pick: Chiefs -6.5
The Texans are going to have to prove they can do something other than self-destruct before I even consider backing them. The Chiefs have been consistently very good, and they are tough at home.
