Super Bowl XLVI Betting Preview- New York Giants vs. New England Patriots
Pointspread: New England -3
Total Line: 55
The New York Giants and the New England Patriots renew their budding inter-conference rivalry next Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on the biggest stage in all of sports, the NFL Super Bowl. The kick-off for Super Bowl XLVI is slated for 6:30 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
It is hard to develop a rivalry between teams that are scheduled to meet every three years, but New York’s 17-14 victory in the 2008 Super Bowl as a prohibitive 12.5-point underdog has helped to add some extra meaning to this matchup. The Giants finished the regular season and three-game playoff run at 12-7 straight-up and 11-7-1 against the spread. The total went 9-9-1 in the 19 games.
Momentum has been and will be the key for New York in this game. It needed two clutch victories at the end of the regular season just to get into the playoffs. The Giants made the most of the opportunity with three more wins in the playoffs behind Eli Manning and an offense that was able to move the ball both on the ground and through the air. The defense also did its part by holding the opposition to a combined 39 points.
New England was expected to be here as a 3/1 preseason favorite to win the AFC and it did not disappoint. It earned the No.1 seed for the playoffs with a 13-3 SU record (9-7 ATS) with the total going ‘over’ in 11 of the 16 games. The Patriots easily covered as 14-point home favorites against Denver in the Divisional Round, but had to sweat-out a 23-20 win over Baltimore as seven-point home favorites in the conference championship.
Everyone knows how potent Tom Brady and the Patriots’ offense can be, but the real test for this game will fall on a defense that did step things up in the playoffs, but ended the regular season ranked 31st in the NFL in total yards allowed.
The Giants are a perfect 8-0 ATS in their last eight playoff games as underdogs and 8-1 ATS in their last nine playoff games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of their last six games overall.
The Patriots are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five Super Bowls and 1-6 ATS in their last seven playoff games as favorites. The total has gone ‘over’ in 24 of their last 32 games as favorites.
Head-to-head in this series, New York is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the last five games. The current line will most likely shift a half point either way once the big money starts coming in, but right now grab a bet on a ‘push’ as this is a three-point game in New England’s favor.
